Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We'll start our tour in a city situated on an island. It is known for the brewery where one of the world's best known drinks was originally produced - it is sometimes referred to as 'Liffey water'. The photo may also point you towards identifying the city as which of these?

Answer: Dublin

Dublin is the home of Guinness, the brewery having been founded in 1759. The city is the capital of the Republic of Ireland, or Eire, with a name that translates as 'black pool'. It is located on the east coast of Ireland, at the mouth of the river Liffey. Apart from the brewery, Dublin can offer Phoenix Park, a castle and numerous other attractions. A visit to Trinity College Library will give you a chance to catch a glimpse of the Book of Kells, a beautifully illustrated Latin version of the Gospels, believed to date from around 800 AD.

The picture of a harp symbolises Ireland, and also appears on the Guinness logo.
2. We move on to France, to a city which is situated in the country's champagne producing region. It also has a renowned cathedral where most of the French monarchs were crowned. Either, or maybe both, of these clues should direct you to which of these cities?

Answer: Reims

Reims is located in the Champagne-Ardenne region of France and is one of the three main centres of champagne production, with Épernay and Ay being the other two. There are numerous tunnels under the city, which is situated on chalk, where champagne is aged. Apart from this attraction, the cathedral - Notre Dame de Reims - was historically used for the coronation of the kings of France. The tradition of using this cathedral recognises the baptism of Clovis I by Saint Remi (also known as Remigius or Remy) in 496 - Clovis was the first king of the Franks.

The picture is of a stone in the cathedral marking the baptism of Clovis I. The name of Reims comes from the people of Remi, who are believed by some to have descended from Remus, brother of Romulus.
3. We'll travel to Central Europe now, and visit the city which gives its name to the light beer in the photograph - remember that you can enlarge it for a better view. Which country are we in now?

Answer: Czech Republic

Pilsen, or Plzen, is situated in Bohemia, in the western part of the Czech Republic. It was established in 1295 when a Royal charter was granted. The brewery was founded in 1839 by civic authorities and was officially owned by the city rather than being in private ownership. They imported a German brewer to oversee the process, and the first beer was produced three years later.

The photo shows a glass of the beer, with its distinctive colour. The original brewery has protected its product by labelling it 'Pilsner Urquell' - the original.
4. We'll try some vodka now and start by visiting the place where Smirnoff was originally distilled. We can also see the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed and the tomb of a long dead leader, meaning that we are in which city?

Answer: Moscow

Smirnoff vodka was originally distilled in the late nineteenth century by Pyotr Smirnov, although it is owned by a British company in 2015 and made in various countries. Vodka is associated with Russia though, and a visit to Moscow will give you a wide choice of different versions of the drink. The Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed is better known as St. Basil's Cathedral and is located at one end of Red Square. Although it looks like one building from the outside, it was originally a group of several churches and there is no large nave inside, as you would normally expect - you walk through hallways to enter each part of the cathedral. Also in Red Square is the mausoleum where Lenin's embalmed body is on display - he died in 1924. The rules for viewing him are strict - no talking, no laughing and hats must be removed - with guards on site to enforce them.

The photo shows a group of matryoshka dolls, which are also linked to Russia.
5. We're now in a city which gives its name to the drink pictured. It is the second largest in its country, after the capital city, and part of the city borders the Atlantic Ocean. Which country are we visiting?

Answer: Portugal

Of the options I gave you, only Spain and Portugal border the Atlantic and the colour of the drink should have helped you identify port wine, named for the city of Porto. Porto is situated on the Douro river and has history dating back to Roman times. As mentioned in the question, Lisbon, the capital, is the only larger city in Portugal.

Of the other choices, all of them have cities which have given their names to alcoholic beverages. Spain's Jerez de la Frontera contributed sherry, while Iran was the origin of the name shiraz. Marsala wine is named for the city of that name in Sicily.
6. The city in which we are located now is known for brewing the lager sold in the bottle pictured. This capital city is known for its canals and trams and has a name derived from the river on which it is situated. Which of these is it?

Answer: Amsterdam

The Heineken brewery, named for its founder, was set up in 1873 in Amsterdam, the capital city of the Netherlands. The city's name is derived from the river Amstel and the earliest records of it are from the late thirteenth century. Amsterdam is known for its numerous canals which gives it the nickname of the 'Venice of the North', although it doesn't hold this title exclusively. The painter, Rembrandt, worked in the city during the seventeenth century and many of his works are displayed in the city's Rijksmuseum, which has been in Amsterdam since 1808. In addition, you can visit the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House. At the other end of the cultural scale is the Red Light District.

The other three cities, although they are capitals, do not fit the other clues. The photo is of the distinctive Heineken bottle.
7. Let's try some Bacardi rum next. The city in which it was originally distilled is on an island, and is the second largest in the country. The name of the city includes the country's name, so in which of these do you think we are now?

Answer: Cuba

The Bacardi company was set up in Santiago de Cuba in 1862, although it has its headquarters in Bermuda in 2015, and Bacardi is no longer sold in the country of Cuba. The original distillery is still in use, though under a different name. Santiago is located in the south eastern region of Cuba and is second in size only to the capital, Havana. It served as the base for the Spanish explorations of Mexico and the southern parts of America. Desi Arnaz, Emilio Estefan and the baseball player Pancho Herrera were all born in the city.

The photo should have helped you, as Cuba is well known for its production of cigars.
8. We haven't visited the USA yet, so let's go to Tennessee and sample some Jack Daniel's whiskey. The distillery was established in 1875, and its headquarters are still located in the same city in 2015. What is the name of the city, the largest in Moore County?

Answer: Lynchburg

Jack Daniel founded his distillery in 1875 and the head office of the business was still in Lynchburg in 2015. Moore County is one of the 'dry counties' of the USA, where no alcohol can be sold, but the restriction doesn't seem to have harmed the whiskey production. The city itself was established in 1841, with the first people to settle in the area having arrived around forty years earlier.

The picture clue shows a noose, sometimes associated with lynching by hanging, to point you in the right direction. The city seems to have been named after a person - exactly who is unclear - rather than for any lawless activities, though.
9. We'll head south now to taste a drink made from the plants in the photograph. The drink is named for the city in which it originated, and can only be given that name, by law, if it is produced in which specific country?

Answer: Mexico

The drink referenced in the question is tequila, named for Santiago de Tequila in the Jalisco region of Mexico. Tequila (the place) dates back to 1530 when a group of Franciscan monks settled there. Production of the drink is long established in the area, with the first distillery being established in 1600, when the Spanish invaders learned the art of distilling the tequila.

The photo shows some blue agave plants, the essential ingredient in the production of the drink.
10. I promised you gin in the title, so we've headed to the UK. Although many brands are designated 'London Gin', we're going to the south coast to buy a specific brand which is protected by law and can be made only in that city. It has connections to America, and to a very well known English sailor. Where have we ended our trip?

Answer: Plymouth

Plymouth is located in Devon, on the English Channel. Its history as a port dates back to Roman times, and it is from here that the first settlers left for the New World of America, in 1620. They gave the name to the colony which they established in Massachusetts. Plymouth is also the city where Sir Francis Drake is said to have insisted on finishing his game of bowls before tackling the minor issue of the Spanish Armada in 1588.

The picture clue shows a pub named The Mayflower, the name of the ship which transported the pilgrims to their new home across the Atlantic.
