Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Starting in Dublin, you want to see the famous Book of Kells. But where?

Answer: The library at Trinity College

Written in Latin by monks around 800 A.D., it's a beautifully scripted manuscript of the Four Gospels.
2. Hitting the road and driving west(remember, drive on the left), you encounter a large hill with what appears to be a fortress at the top. With magnificent views of the Tipperary country side, you can also see a 12th century chapel, a roofless abbey and numerous high crosses within the fortress walls. You're at...

Answer: The Rock of Cashel

Legend has it that in the 5th century, St. Patrick converted the king of the day, Aenglus, at this very site. Ireland has been predominately Catholic ever since.
3. Heading south to the sea, you pick up some famous crystal in this city.

Answer: Waterford

You can tour the works but just to see replicas of all the famous Waterford Crystal trophies given to athletes is worth the trip!
4. The Lusitania was torpedoed just off the coast of Ireland in 1915. You can visit this place where a memorial stands to the many victims of that tragedy very close to where the survivors where taken.

Answer: Old Head of Kinsale

Although a poignant site, the magnificent views are consoling.
5. On to Killarney, the undeniable tourist center of Ireland. Lots to see and do, restaurants and hotels of all stripes and, of course, great pubs. You expect to see all these sights except for one. Which one?

Answer: Lough Neagh

The beautiful lake (or lough in Irish) you see is Lough Leane. Lough Neagh is the largest lake in Ireland but located in Northern Ireland. The views of the lake, framed by the Macgillicuddy Reeks, the tallest mountain range in Ireland, are lovely especially from the hills north of town. Touring the Ring of Kerry for the views of the Irish countryside replete with stone walls to contain sheep herds is not to be missed.

The Gap of Dunloe provides another view of the town and lake from on high as you complete the Ring of Kerry tour.
6. Your next destination is the Dingle Peninsula for more beautiful views. All these are true about Dingle and the environs except...

Answer: This was one of the two sites of the first trans-Atlantic telegram

The first telegram across the sea was from Newfoundland to Valentia Island on the Ring of Kerry in 1858. Regarding the pub answer, the locals couldn't stand to be without a pint of Guinness I guess, but every merchant, business or shop was licensed to serve. A pint with your haircut? Alas, the bylaw has been rescinded!
7. Traveling further up the western coast, you cross the Shannon River by ferry and within a short time encounter an unusual landscape of terraced limestone complete with disappearing rivers and lakes and numerous caves. What's this?

Answer: The Burren

It's from this area and the territory even further north where you find the peat bogs.
8. You spot the Aran Islands when you hit water and decide to ferry over. You depart from the biggest city in the area. It is?

Answer: Galway

The Aran Islands (Inishmor, Inishmaan and Inisheer) have some of the oldest Christian and pre-Christian artifacts in Ireland and the people speak Gaelic rather than English. It is pure Ireland!
9. Continuing your trip north, you drive through some of the most desolate country in Ireland. You finally reach civilization and find a cute little town teeming with young back packers. They always gravitate to the remotest areas, don't they? This town is famous for being the spot where Alcock and Brown landed after their non-stop flight over the Atlantic in 1919. What's this town named in the Connemara Region?

Answer: Clifden

Apparently there was a spa there, but like Rick Blaine who went to Casablanca for "the waters" but was misinformed, I could find no evidence to confirm the presence of a spa. You can also take horse ride tours of this forbidding region.
10. Still going north, you eventually drive out of the desolation and stop at this rather large town that could be mistaken for a city, the heart of "Yeats Country".

Answer: Sligo

Yeats is buried in a small village, Drumcliffe, a couple of kilometers north of Sligo.
11. Now you start driving north east toward Ulster or Northern Ireland. What is the border city you enter in Ulster from the west?

Answer: Derry or Londonderry

I was once tricked into believing the song "Londonderry Air" was really "London Derriere".
12. In this town near Portrush, you sample the delights of Irish Whiskey.

Answer: Bushmills

The oldest (legal) distillery in Ireland, chartered in 1608 by King James I.

Although James I DID grant a licence to distill whiskey in the Bushmills AREA in 1608 (and it IS the first royal licence ever awarded to distill whiskey), the Bushmills Distillery itself was only founded in 1784. The oldest legal distillery in Ireland is Locke 's Distillery at Kilbeggan in County Meath which opened in 1757 - and which began whiskey distilling again in 2007 after many years in mothball. (info provided by dsimpy)
13. Driving along the Antrim Coast, one of the most scenic drives on the planet, you see all these places except for...

Answer: The Cliffs of Moher

You'll also see Scotland on a clear day! The Cliffs of Moher are in west Ireland south of Galway. On this tour, you would have passed them about a week ago! By the way, the cliffs are spectacular and a "can't miss". On the Antrim coast, the same holds true for the Giant's Causeway - spectacular!
14. You now drive down the eastern coast of Northern Ireland and encounter a lovely area in County Down largely due to a small range of mountains very close to the shore. They are?

Answer: The Mourne Mountains

If you're a golfer, don't forget to play Royal County Down rated among the top ten in the world! It's in Newcastle.
15. You're now back in Dublin with a day left on your vacation. You decide to see more of the sights of Dublin and the surrounding area. What will you not see in Dublin?

Answer: The Blarney Stone

The Blarney Stone is in Blarney Castle near Cork.

So, that concludes your tour and I hope you had a good time. Incidently, I've been to Ireland three times and this quiz was a conglomeration of those trips although you could easily do all this in a couple of leisurely weeks.
Sláinte!
