Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Not surprisingly, the signs at the train station in Cardiff are in English and Welsh. What is Welsh for "Cardiff Central"?

Answer: Caerdydd Canolog

The Welsh for Cardiff is "Caerdydd" and for Central is "Canolog." The Central Station is a quick two hour trip from London. It is located in the heart of downtown Cardiff, roughly a mile north of the waterfront. The station was built by the Great Western Railway in 1932. It is one of the busiest stations in the United Kingdom, with millions of visitors annually. The town of Cardigan is in Wales; oddly enough, it has nothing to do with the sweaters.
Fans of "Doctor Who" can see Cardiff Central at the beginning of "Boom Town" as Mickey arrives at the station.
2. The Baycar takes you from the train station to Porth Teigr, where I took this picture standing near the Norwegian Church. What town lies directly across the bay?

Answer: Penarth

Penarth lies roughly 5.2 miles southwest of central Cardiff. It has been a popular holiday destination since the Victorian era, although tourism has declined since the 1950s. "Doctor Who", "The Sarah Jane Adventures" and "Torchwood" have all shot episodes in Penarth.
3. A short walk led me to this modern glass and steel structure. What type of people work in this building?

Answer: Government Officials

This is the Senedd, which houses the chambers of the Welsh Assembly. It was designed by Richard Rogers, one of Britain's foremost architects. The building opened in February 2006 and cost almost 70 million British pounds. The building doubled as the headquarters of Doctor Lazarus in the "Doctor Who" episode "The Lazarus Experiment." Atradius Insurance, which can been seen in "The Runaway Bride" is only a few hundred meters away.
4. The Pierhead Building is well known for its elaborate exterior. What kind of earthenware covers the building?

Answer: Terra Cotta

The Pierhead's bright red exterior is classic Terra Cotta. It is a clay based ceramic, which can be glazed or unglazed. The highlight of the building is its clock tower, which houses the "Big Ben of Wales." The Pierhead was designed by William Frame, and opened in 1897. It has had a variety of uses over the years, including a museum with displays about Welsh history. The Pierhead lies between the Senedd building and the Millennium Center.
5. The large plaza directly north of the harbor in Cardiff Bay is named after what famous Welsh writer?

Answer: Roald Dahl

The central square is named after Roald Dahl (1916-1990), whose novels include "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "James and the Giant Peach" and "Matilda." His parents were Norwegian and Dahl was christened in the Norwegian Church. The area is called Plass, the Norwegian word for "place."
There is a statue of Ivor Novello on the Roald Dahl Plass. Novello was best known as a composer. The large silver tower is technically known as the Water Tower, but due to the popularity of the science fiction series is known locally as "Torchwood Tower."
6. The Millennium Center is one of the most dramatic buildings in Cardiff. It is notable for a line of poetry on the front by which Welsh poet?

Answer: Gwyneth Lewis

Gwyneth Lewis was the first National Poet of Wales, from 2005 to 2006. She was first published in 1977, and has written a wide variety of poetry and non-fiction books, winning a variety of literary awards. The Welsh version says Creu Gwir fel gwydr o ffwrnais awen, which means "Creating truth like glass from the furnace of inspiration." The English text is In These Stones Horizons Sing. The Millennium Center was built in two parts; the first opened in 2004, the second in 2009.

It houses one large theater and two smaller ones.

The center has been in both "Doctor Who" and "Torchwood". Its sterile look made the building a good stand-in for a hospital in the "Doctor Who" episodes "New Earth" and "The Girl Who Waited."
7. This building, the Coal Exchange, was at the heart of the Industrial Revolution, when Cardiff was one of the world's largest coal centers. In the 21st century, the building was converted to what other purpose?

Answer: Concert Venue

The Coal Exchange was built between 1883 and 1886, and was the site of the world's first one million pound commercial transaction. In 2001, it was converted into a concert venue and has held concerts by groups such as Manic Street Preachers. Unfortunately, in August 2013, the building was declared structurally unsound and required major renovations. The building's interior has been used for a variety of settings in "Doctor Who" including the White House ("The Impossible Astronaut") and the Titanic ("Voyage of the Damned").
8. Standing at the corner of Stuart Street and Adelaide, you can see a large museum called Techniquest. The museum has moved several times. When was it built at this location?

Answer: 1995

Techniquest has been at Stuart Street since 1995. It began in 1985 at the gas works showroom, then moved in 1988 to Cardiff Bay. That location was torn down in 1995 to make room for the shopping district on the waterfront. Techniquest is a hands-on science and technology museum, with several locations throughout Wales. They also go to schools for science presentations.
9. A little farther down along Stuart street, you come to a large shopping center. What is this large waterfront shopping district called?

Answer: Mermaid Quay

Mermaid Quay was the centerpiece of an effort of restore the Docklands area of Cardiff in the 1990s. It opened in August 1999. Mermaid Quay is a bi-level complex containing a variety of stores and restaurants. Several episodes of "Doctor Who" and "Torchwood" have been shot in this area. The diner scenes in "The Impossible Astronaut" were shot at Eddie's Diner, while the dinner between the Ninth Doctor and Margaret was shot at Bellini's.
Royal Arcade and Saint David's are both located near The Hayes, in the center of Cardiff. The Red Dragon Center is located on Lloyd George Avenue.
10. The large blue building on the right (which appears to be bigger on the inside) is a museum dedicated to what long-running British television series?

Answer: "Doctor Who"

"Doctor Who" celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in November 2013. The show is about an eccentric Time Lord who journeys across time and space saving planets from monsters and madmen. The show first ran from 1963 to 1987, and was resurrected in 2005. On December 25, 2013, "Doctor Who" aired its 800th episode. Since 2005, much of filming has been done in the Cardiff area.
The Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff was built between September 2011 and May 2012. It opened on July 20, 2012. The museum contains props, costumes, several sets and a variety of monsters from the show.
"Coronation Street", the soap opera, began in 1960 and has lasted over 50 years. "University Challenge" began in 1962, ran to 1987, and returned in 1994. "Sooty", a children's show featuring a yellow bear puppet, first aired in 1955.
