Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the approximate population of Cardiff in the 2001 census?

Answer: 275,000

The census of the United Kingdom carried out in 2001 gave 275,000 as the population of the City of Cardiff, which is low for a nation's capital.
2. Cardiff has a team in European and Celtic countries rugby union competitions. It's named after the plural of which colour?

Answer: Blue

Teams playing at the level of the Blues were meant to be amalgamations with other clubs but the Cardiff club, one of the top clubs in Wales for a long time, got away with remaining largely as it was although promising to consider players from the valleys outside Cardiff.
3. Most citizens of Cardiff use an unusual form of thanks to bus drivers when alighting from the vehicle. What is it?

Answer: Thanks Drive!

I always thought that the phrase was unique to Cardiff but learnt recently from a radio programme on dialects and accents that it is also used in Kingston-on-Hull. Natural reserve prevents me from using it but my kids have easily fallen into the habit. Unlike the other offerings, it also conforms with political correctness as there are some lady bus drivers in Cardiff.
4. All the statues spaced around the walls of Cardiff Castle are of one category. Which?

Answer: Animals

Although the vast majority of Cardiff Castle was built towards the end of the nineteenth century for the coal entrepreneur, the Earl of Bute, a part of the walls are built upon the remains of Roman walling.
5. In which of its suburbs is Cardiff's Anglican cathedral situated?

Answer: Llandaff

There really is a suburb of Cardiff called Splott which, for some strange reason, seems to cause undue mirth amongst non-Cardiffians!
6. The Welsh Rugby team plays its home matches right in the middle of Cardiff. What name was given to the stadium constructed for the 1999 Rugby Union World Cup? (The name has since been changed)

Answer: Millennium

The stadium was reconstructed on the site of two former ones known as Cardiff Arms Park whilst the Glamorgan cricket team play nearby at Sophia Gardens. The name was changed to Principality in 2016.
7. Although rugby union is the most popular sport in Wales, Cardiff also possesses a good football(soccer) team. What is its nickname?

Answer: Bluebirds

The team has always played in blue hence, presumably, the nickname. Unlike a lot of other teams in professional football, the nickname is incorporated in the team's strip .
8. Cardiff's main train station for journeys outside of Wales is called Cardiff Central. It also, however, has another station for local trains named after Cardiff's main shopping street. What is its name?

Answer: Queen Street

The station is at the eastern end of Cardiff's main shopping street. It has been long been pedestrianised, although I still remember trolleybuses rolling down it and, later, driving down it amongst four lanes of jammed up traffic when it was a one way thoroughfare.
9. A small street in the centre of Cardiff has been nicknamed 'Chippy Lane' because of the variety of take away food one can find there after the pubs and clubs close. What is its real name?

Answer: Caroline Street

The street - once regarded as a fun place if inebriated and peckish but hardly respectable - has been beautified over recent years with the building of flats, paving over and the closure of many of the food outlets. The chipshop which provides the 'chicken curry off the bone' that came to be associated with the street is still open though. Golate is the name of a street named after sailors racing through it to catch their ships before they sailed when the docks were a lot nearer to the city centre than they are now.
10. Cardiff's waterfront has been built on extensively since a barrage was built to stop the River Taff flowing out to sea. Under the name of Cardiff Bay, it has become a prime site for up market housing and commercial development. The area had a different name (and reputation!) previously. What was it?

Answer: Tiger Bay

There was a Temperance Town, but it was the area now occupied by the city's main train and bus station. Tiger Bay was immortalised in a film starring Hayley Mills and Horst Bucholz.
