1. Which river flows through the city of Adelaide?

Answer: Torrens

The river Torrens flows down from the Adelaide hills through the suburbs and city of Adelaide and into the Gulf St Vincent. The river level is controlled by a weir allowing enough water for paddle boats and rowing clubs to enjoy. Every so often the water is drained out so the river floor can be cleaned.

The river is quite polluted, swimming is either not allowed or not recommended. For fishermen not fussy about what they catch the water is home to numerous European Carp, a noxious fish in Australia.
2. Who founded the city of Adelaide?

Answer: Colonel Light

The statue of Colonel Light looks over the city he founded from Montefiore Hill. The Colonel designed the city within a ring of parklands. These parklands remain today and are home to numerous sporting clubs, walking trails and gardens.
3. Adelaide has its fair share of sporting teams. What is the name of its national basketball team?

Answer: 36ers

The Adelaide 36ers are named for the year 1836, the founding date of the colony of South Australia. Other national sporting teams in Adelaide include the Adelaide Crows and Port Power football teams, the Lightning womens basketball team and the Redbacks cricket side. Generally Adelaide's sporting teams have proven themselves more than competitive on the national front.

Answer: The Family

Notorious murderer Bevan Spencer Von Einem was charged with the murder and torture of a 15 year old boy. His trial revealed evidence of a group of people working together to commit unspeakable crimes against young men. It was rumoured a number of high profile Adelaide identities were involved.
Perhaps Adelaide's most famous crime was the abduction of the three Beaumont children in 1966. Taken from a busy city beach they have never been seen again.
5. A short trip by tram from Adelaide will get you to which seaside suburb?

Answer: Glenelg

Adelaide's one and only tram track will take you from the city centre to the beachside suburb of Glenelg. Glenelg was the site where the colony of South Australia was proclaimed.
Today Glenelg has become a popular place to gather either on the beach, the surrounding parks or the numerous cafes that line its main street Jetty Road.
6. If you were to meet somebody in Adelaide's Rundle Mall there's a good chance you would arrange to meet at this landmark.

Answer: The Silver Balls

Rundle Mall has a number of sculptures decorating it. Apart from the Mall's Balls there are the four bronze pigs trotting about and rummaging through the bins. Another popular meeting place is Beehive Corner at the end of Rundle Mall, if you can drag your eyes away from the chocolates on display at Haighs you can see a bright bee atop the building.
7. What is the Popeye?

Answer: A boat

For years the Popeye has been ferrying people along the Torrens lake.
It is a popular trip for families who can take the Popeye along the river and arrive at the Adelaide zoo.
From the Torrens you can see other Adelaide landmarks such as the Festival Theatre and the Adelaide Oval.
8. Adelaide was designed around five major squares. Which of these squares is the largest and most central?

Answer: Victoria

Adelaide was designed in a grid formation with streets running either north to south or east to west. The streets were designed wide enough so as to allow horse drawn cannon to be positioned and fired down them. This has never been required however. Adelaide's city squares are Victoria, Hurtle, Whitmore, Light and Hindmarsh, all are parks.
Across the river is North Adelaide was planned in a similar fashion and has Wellington Square in its centre.
9. Adelaide has many festivals, the Glendi festival is a celebration of which of Adelaide's ethnic communities?

Answer: Greek

Adelaide's biggest festival is the bi-annual Festival of the Arts and its alternative twin, the Fringe Festival. There are also festivals celebrating Italian and South American cultures. An annual shooting event in the Adelaide Hill's town of Hahndorf has become the very popular Schutzenfest carnival where drinking beer and eating German sausages have become the most popular attractions.
10. Adelaide is nestled between the Mount Lofty Ranges and the shores of which body of water?

Answer: Gulf St Vincent

The smaller of South Australia's two gulfs the Gulf St Vincent, home to many popular beaches and also offers a variety of tasty seafood. The King George whiting is regarded as one Australia's finest eating fish. In the summer months the northern reaches of the gulf become home to the delicious Blue Swimmer Crab, a much sought after delicacy.
