Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following countries is NOT in Africa?

Answer: Suriname

Suriname is a South American country bordering French Guiana and Guyana in the continent's north-east. Africa has historically had the most countries of any continent; at the start of the 21st century there were over fifty countries on the continent.
2. Which of the following African cities is the odd one out because it was also not a capital city at the turn of the 21st Century?

Answer: Lagos

Lagos was the former capital of Nigeria, but that was moved to Abuja as of 1991. Lomé is the capital of Togo; Luanda the capital of Angola; and Lusaka is Zambia's capital.
3. Which of these bodies of water does not form part of Africa's coast?

Answer: Laccadive Sea

The Laccadive Sea is in Asia, bordering India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. The Red Sea borders Eritrea and Egypt; the Mediterranean Sea Egypt, Libya and Algeria; and the Gulf of Guinea sits underneath Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria.
4. Which of these African countries is NOT landlocked?

Answer: Togo

Togo has a short coastal border to its south, touching the Gulf of Guinea (part of the Atlantic Ocean). While Chad and Niger have Lake Chad, they do not border any coastal regions. Nor does South Sudan, which borders Sudan, Ethiopia, Central African Republic, Chad, Libya and Egypt.
5. Africa is famous for its many game reserves. Were any game reserves established outside the continent during the 20th Century?

Answer: Yes

While some would argue that a game reserve by definition has to be in Africa, several other countries claim them. Even Australia, more defined by her deserts than safari-like climate, has a reserve called the Chowilla Game Reserve, in South Australia.
6. Which of these cities is NOT in Africa?

Answer: Oti

Oti is in Lithuania. Ode, Owo and Oyo are all cities in Nigeria.
7. Which of these African countries did NOT achieve independence in the 20th century?

Answer: South Sudan

All countries on this list achieved independence well after the majority (which tended to happen quickly post-World War II). Djibouti became independent from France in 1977; Namibia from South Africa in 1990; and Eritrea from Ethiopia in 1993. South Sudan was much more recent, achieving its own status as a standalone nation (from Sudan) in 2011.
8. Madagascar is the only African island nation that sits below the equator.

Answer: False

Several other African island nations sit below the equator, including Mauritius, Comoros and the Seychelles.
9. Africa has several large countries by land area. Which of these is NOT one of the top five by area?

Answer: Ethiopia

The biggest 12 countries in Africa have areas of over 1,000,000 square km (about 385,000 square miles). Ethiopia sits outside the top five but is still large by global standards. It comes in at number ten within Africa, at about 1.1 million square km.
10. Which of these countries is not an African island nation?

Answer: Palau

Palau is in the Western Pacific Ocean and is geographically considered to be part of Micronesia. The remaining options are all considered to be part of Africa, sitting off the east coast of the continent (Seychelles and Mauritius) or the west coast (São Tomé and Príncipe).
