Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Syria has land borders with five other countries. Which of these is NOT one of those five?

Answer: Iran

Syria is bordered by Lebanon to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south and Israel to the southwest. It has no border with Iran.

Syria's longest land border is with Turkey, 514 miles. The border between Syria and Israel is just 47.5 miles long.
2. Which African country shares land borders with Western Sahara, Algeria, Mali and Senegal?

Answer: Mauritania

The 11th-largest country in Africa and about one-and-a-half times the size of Texas, Mauritania has a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean and shares land borders with Western Sahara to the north, Algeria to the northeast, Senegal to the southwest and Mali to the east and southeast. The longest of those of those land borders is with Mali, 1,398 miles.
3. The world's fifth-largest country, Brazil, covers 47.3% of South America and borders all but two of the other countries on the continent. Chile is one of those two countries. Which is the other?

Answer: Ecuador

The largest country in the Southern Hemisphere, Brazil is almost exactly half the size of the world's largest country, Russia. The only two South American countries with which Brazil does not share a land border are Chile and Ecuador. Of the ten countries with which it does have a land border, the longest is with Bolivia (2,115 miles) and the shortest with shortest is with Suriname (320 miles).
4. Russia has land borders with 14 other countries (16 if you count Abkhazia and South Ossetia as sovereign states). With which of these does Russia share its longest land border?

Answer: Kazakhstan

The total length of Russia's land borders is more than 12,500 miles. The longest with any individual country is with Kazakhstan, 4,695 miles. It also has land borders in excess of 1,000 miles with three other countries: China 2,630 miles, Mongolia 2,178 miles and Ukraine 1,204 miles. The border with Finland is 795 miles. Russia's shortest land border is with North Korea, just 10.6 miles.
5. Bridges are often built across international borders, many (such as those crossing the Thailand-Laos or the Afghanistan-Uzbekistan borders) given names such as "Friendship Bridge". Which international land border, though, is straddled by the "Bridge of No Return"?

Answer: North Korea-South Korea

The Bridge of No Return crosses the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) between North and South Korea and has military checkpoints at each end. It was used for prisoner exchanges following the end of the Korean War in 1953. Prisoners taken to the bridge for exchange were given a final choice: stay where they were as a prisoner or return to their country of origin. The decision was final -- once the bridge was crossed, there could be no return.

Between 1953 and 1968, more than 100,000 prisoners crossed the bridge, the vast majority returning to the northern side of the border. Following the murder of two US Army officers in 1976, the bridge was deemed too dangerous to use, but the North Koreans promptly built another bridge nearby, dubbed "The 72-Hour Bridge" (echoing how long construction took). The southern half of the Bridge of No Return is still sometimes used by the US Army for ceremonial purposes, and it has also featured in numerous cinematic productions (notably James Bond's "Die Another Day").
6. More than 20 countries have land borders with only a single neighbour. Which of these countries is NOT one of those?

Answer: Kuwait

Denmark has only a single land border, with Germany to the south, although there is also a bridge linking it to Sweden to the north. Other European countries bordering a single country include Monaco, San Marino, Ireland, the UK and Portugal. If you count the individual constituents of the UK as individual countries, you can also add Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to that list. In Africa, The Gambia is completely surrounded by Senegal whilst Lesotho borders only South Africa.

In Asia, the 'Nation of Brunei, the Abode of Peace' is completely surrounded by Malaysia. Other single-neighbour countries in Asia include East Timor, South Korea and Qatar, but NOT Kuwait, which has land borders with both Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

Papua New Guinea has only one land border in Oceania, whilst in North America Haiti and Dominican Republic share a common border whilst Canada is the world's largest country with only one neighbour.
7. Joining the European Union at the time of the expansion to 28 countries in 2007, Bulgaria has land borders with five other countries. With which of those countries does one of Europe's mightiest rivers form Bulgaria's northern border?

Answer: Romania

Almost exactly the same size as the US state of Virginia, Bulgaria is the world's 105th largest country and the 11th-largest in the European Union. The Black Sea lies to the east of Bulgaria, and it shares land borders with Serbia and Macedonia to the west, and Greece and Turkey to the south. To the north, the River Danube makes up 294 miles of Bulgaria's 381-mile long border with Romania, the other country that gained accession to the EU at the same time.
8. Which major European river rises in Switzerland before forming the Swiss border with Austria, then the Swiss-Liechtenstein and Swiss-German borders, before turning north to define much of the border between Germany and France?

Answer: Rhine

The River Rhine rises in the canton of the Grisons in eastern Switzerland before forming the Swiss border with Austria and then Liechtenstein. After flowing through Lake Constance near Basel, it forms the German-Swiss for about 100 miles. Turning north at Basel, it constitutes more than 200 miles of the German-French border, with the western border of the state of Baden-Württemberg on the German side and the eastern border of the historic region of Alsace on the French side.

Western and Central Europe's second-longest river (after the Danube), the Rhine flows a total distance of 764 miles before emptying into the North Sea in the Netherlands.
9. Lakes can also form all or part of international borders. With the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia on its west shore and Tanzania and Burundi on the east, which lake defines part of these country's international borders?

Answer: Lake Tanganyika

Extending 420 miles from north to south, Lake Tanganyika is the world's longest freshwater lake. It is also the deepest (averaging 1,870 feet deep) and the largest freshwater lake by volume in Africa, and second in both categories in the world, only behind Lake Baikal in Russia.

It contains an amazing 16-18% of the world's available fresh water. Although an average of only 31 miles across from east to west, Lake Tanganyika has an area equivalent to the US state of Maryland (or half the size of Sri Lanka).
10. Bordering nine other countries, which country excluding Russia has land borders with the most other European countries?

Answer: Germany

Clockwise from the north, Germany has land borders with Denmark, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, France, Luxemburg, Belgium and Netherlands. Eight of the nine (Switzerland being the exception) are members of the European Union. Germany's longest land border is with Austria, 497 miles. Its border with the Czech Republic is also more than 400 miles long (437).

Austria has land borders with eight other countries, as do France and Turkey. Poland borders seven other European countries, as do Hungary and Ukraine. Italy borders only six others.
