Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following universities is NOT located in Houston?

Answer: Southern Methodist University

SMU is located in Dallas. In addition to Rice, TSU and St. Thomas, Houston is also home to the University of Houston, Houston Baptist University and several medical schools as part of the prestigious Medical Center.
2. Which two interstate freeways meet near downtown Houston?

Answer: Interstates 10 and 45

Interstates 10 and 45 intersect near Buffalo Bayou. The founders of the city, the Allen brothers, settled near this exact spot.
3. Houston has the power to annex suburbs to add size and population to the city.

Answer: True

The city has a history of annexing unincorporated, affluent suburbs. This expands the size of the city and its tax base.
4. In which of the following suburbs is NASA located?

Answer: Clear Lake

The phrase, "Houston, we have a problem" is amusing to many Houstonians because NASA is not actually in Houston. Most of the NASA staff, including the astronauts, live in Clear Lake or the tiny towns near it.
5. What big event takes place every February/March in Houston?

Answer: The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

The Rodeo has traditionally been held at the Astrodome. It is now held at the new Reliant Center/Stadium and includes not only traditional rodeo events such as bull riding, but features famous musical acts each evening. Performers such as Elvis, George Strait, and Tony Bennett have all participated.
6. Which of these musical acts is NOT from Houston?

Answer: Aerosmith

Contrary to popular belief, not everyone in Houston listens to country music. Houston is home to the creators of many genres of music.
7. After which energy company was the baseball stadium once named?

Answer: Enron

Once Enron went through its high profile court proceedings, the Astros bought back the naming rights of the field. It has since been renamed Minute Maid Park.
8. Which professional sport is the only one in Houston to NOT have a team name associated with NASA/space?

Answer: football

The football team is named the Houston Texans. The baseball team is the Astros, the hockey team is the Aeros, the basketball team is the Rockets and the WNBA team is the Comets.
9. Which of the following titles has been bestowed upon Houston?

Answer: The Fattest City in the US

Houston has been named the nation's fattest city for two years in a row. I don't know how this was determined, but I would have to disagree having traveled to other cities. Houston definitely does not have the cleanest air; it is second to Los Angeles for the worst air quality.
10. Which former president has made Houston his home?

Answer: George H. W. Bush

Houston's Intercontinental Airport was renamed for him.
