Answer: Delaware

The best known nickname for the U.S. state of Delaware is "The First State" as, on December 7, 1787, it became the first of the original 13 colonies to ratify the U.S. Constitution. With an area of just 2,489 square miles (slightly larger than Brunei), only Rhode Island is smaller, hence the nickname "The Small Wonder".

The Blue Hen of Delaware, a variety of chicken, was adopted as the official state bird in 1939 and is also the mascot of the University of Delaware. U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden, a former Senator for Delaware, played halfback for the Fighting Blue Hens in the 1960s (hence the photograph). "The Diamond State" is a nickname that Delaware shares with Arkansas.
2. Which Asian nation was once known in English as "The Land of the Morning Calm"?
