Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Both the 'Old Town' and 'New Town' districts of which British city were named as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1995?

Answer: Edinburgh

The UK got its first World Heritage sites in 1986. These included the Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd (Wales), Giant's Causeway (Northern Ireland), St Kilda (Scotland), Durham Castle and Cathedral, Ironbridge Gorge, Stonehenge and Studley Royal Park. Edinburgh's Old Town and New Town were the 12th UK World Heritage site when they were listed in 1995.

In 2009, the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct near Wrexham (Wales) became the UK's 23rd World Heritage site.
2. Although not the national capital, Schaan is the largest municipality in which European country?

Answer: Liechtenstein

Dating back to the 9th Century, Schaan is the largest municipality in Liechtenstein. It is located to the north of the national capital, Vaduz, and just across the border from the Swiss town of Buchs. Schaan is the home to the headquarters of Ivoclar Vivadent AG, the world's largest false teeth manufacturers.
3. Which animal appears of the coat of arms of Greenland?

Answer: Polar Bear

Although technically part of North America, Greenland has long been part of Denmark and thus qualifies as an honorary European country.
The Greenland coat of arms is a blue shield with a silver polar bear standing on its hind legs. Adopted in 1989, the polar bear image dates back to the 17th-Century Danish coat of arms, and is still today represented in the coat of arms of the Danish royal family.
4. Water traffic from which European capital city accesses the open sea via the Skagerrak Strait?

Answer: Oslo

The Skagerrak Strait connects the North Sea to the Kattegat, which then leads into the Baltic. It separates southern Norway and the southwestern Swedish coast from Denmark's Jutland Peninsula. The Norwegian capital lies to the north of the Skagerrak, on the Oslofjord. More than 40 islands within the fjord lie within the city limits.
5. Of the 27 member countries of the European Union, in how many would you drive on the left-hand side of the road?

Answer: 3

You would drive on the left in only 3 of the 27 EU countries -- those with British historical influence: Ireland, Cyprus, Malta and, (before Brexit), the UK. Around the world, approximately one third of people live in countries where you would drive on the left. A 1969 survey suggested that driving on the left is safer.

The suspected reason for this is that most people are both right-eye dominant and right-handed. When driving on the left, it is the right eye that watches the middle of the road and the wing mirror.

It is also the right hand that remains on the steering wheel when changing gear.
6. On which body of water does Bosnia-Herzegovina have its only coastline?

Answer: Adriatic Sea

Bosnia has land borders to the north with Croatia, to the southeast with Montenegro, and in other directions with Serbia. It also has a short, 16-mile, coastline on the Adriatic Sea. Bosnia's only port is the small town of Neum.
7. The Neman, the Pripyat and the Dnieper are the principal rivers of which European country?

Answer: Belarus

The Dnieper, Europe's fourth-longest river with a total length of 1,420 miles, rises in Russia and flows southwards through Belarus and the Ukraine into the Black Sea. The Pripyat follows a 440-mile long eastward journey from the Ukraine and through Belarus before joining the Dnieper.

The 580-mile long Neman rises in Belarus south of Minsk and flows westwards, traveling through Lithuania enroute to the Baltic Sea.
8. The Øresund Bridge across the Øresund Strait, Europe's longest road/rail bridge, connects which two countries?

Answer: Sweden and Denmark

Opened in 2000, the Øresund Bridge has a total length of 25,738 feet (i.e. just over five miles) and carries the four lanes of European route E20 road and the twin-track Øresund Rail Line. The two major cities connected by the bridge are Malmo on the Swedish side and Copenhagen, the Danish capital.
9. Which is the northernmost of the main islands within the Channel Islands group?

Answer: Alderney

Although it is little more than 3 square miles in size, Alderney is the third largest of the Channel Islands after Jersey and Guernsey. Lying 20 miles northeast of Guernsey, Alderney is not only the northernmost of the main islands, it is also both the closest to the French mainland and the closest to Great Britain.

The Cotentin Peninsula in Normandy lies just 10 miles east of Alderney across the dangerous 'Race of Alderney' strait. The south coast of England lies 60 miles to the north of Alderney.
10. The body of water known as the East Sea in German and Swedish and the West Sea in Estonian is known by which name in English?

Answer: Baltic Sea

Stretching almost 1,000 miles from its northern to southern points, with a width of 120 miles, the Baltic Sea covers some 146,000 sq miles, almost exactly the size of Japan and slightly larger than Germany. It has an average depth of around 180 feet but drops down to as deep as 1,500 feet off parts of the Swedish coast.

The Baltic has coastlines in nine countries (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden) and has dozens of important ports including five capital cities (Stockholm, Riga, Helsinki, Copenhagen and Tallinn).
