Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following iconic Australian beaches a mere seven kilometres east of the centre of Sydney claims to have the first 'official' lifesaving club in the world?

Answer: Bondi Beach

This title is disputed by the Bronte Surf Lifesaving Club, which bases its claim on the minutes of a 1907 club meeting. However, the establishment of the Bondi Surf Bathers' Life Saving Club was recorded by a local paper and acknowledged by the local council.
2. Dendy Street Beach in Brighton, Victoria, is famous for what?

Answer: Brightly coloured beach huts (or bathing boxes)

If you've never seen these, look them up. They have been made famous by artists and photographers and are highly sought after as real estate investments. Other beaches along Port Phillip Bay also have bathing boxes but none seem to be as iconic as those at Dendy Street Beach. The beach is located approximately 14km south of Melbourne's CBD.
3. Which famous surfing destination is just outside of Torquay, Victoria?

Answer: Bells Beach

Located 86km south-west of Melbourne, Bell's Beach was named after a farming pioneer. The Rip Curl Pro surfing competition is held at Bells Beach annually. Parts of the movie 'Point Break' (starring Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves) were set there although the scenes were filmed in the USA.
4. Cable Beach in Broome is often associated with which of the following?

Answer: Camels and sunsets

Broome is located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, 2200km north of Perth. Cable Beach is picture postcard perfect at sunset! A large percentage of Australians live on the east coast, so watching the sun set over the ocean is a unique experience.
5. Which town boasts a lighthouse perched on the most easterly point of the Australian mainland as well as lovely sandy beaches?

Answer: Byron Bay

Byron Bay is 165km south of Brisbane and 770km north of Sydney. It is also famous for its annual Blues Festival.
6. The 75-mile long beach on this large, sandy island off the Queensland coast is used as both a road and a runway (give way to all incoming aircraft!). Where in Australia am I?

Answer: K'gari

K'gari (formerly known as Fraser Island) is a World Heritage-listed site. 75 Mile beach is flanked by 200-metre tall sand cliffs and the island itself has more than one hundred freshwater lakes and ancient rainforests. The dingo population on the island has become infamous for encroaching onto campsites.
7. Which metallic 'tourist trap', beach bonanza and glitzy shopping strip is a holiday destination for many Australians and overseas visitors alike?

Answer: The Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is home to meter maids dressed in skimpy gold bikinis, beaches with golden sand and Formula One racing. It's a short drive south from Brisbane.
8. If you are lucky enough to visit Monkey Mia in Western Australia, you may get the chance to interact with which type of sea life?

Answer: Dolphins

Monkey Mia is a nine hour drive north of Perth and is located in the Shark Bay Marine Park and World Heritage Site.
9. Stockton Beach is just north of which major city in New South Wales?

Answer: Newcastle

Stockton Beach is synonymous with sand dunes. The area is known for its cultural significance, off-road driving, shipwrecks, great white sharks and long, wide beach. The dunes have been used as film locations for movies such as 'Mad Max' and 'Sahara'. A number of music videos have also been filmed on or around the Stockton Sand Dunes.
10. When swimming at a patrolled Australian beach, it is important to stay between which coloured flags?

Answer: Red and yellow

Blue denotes a board riding area.
Red means danger: The beach is closed for swimming.
A red and white chequered flag means a shark has been sighted in the area.
