Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Melbourne

Answer: Yarra

The Victorian capital sits on the banks of the Yarra River. The CBD is on the north side of the river, and Southbank (on the southern bank!), is home to the casino, restaurant strip, nightclubs and some rather quirky sculptures.
2. Alice Springs

Answer: Todd

Much of the time, the Todd River is missing a rather vital attribute of a river- water! Alice Springs is the second-largest city in the Northern Territory (Darwin is the largest), and is surrounded by desert. The riverbed is usually dry, but flash floods of chocolate-coloured waters happen occasionally.
3. Newcastle

Answer: Hunter

Newcastle is the largest regional city in New South Wales, and one of the largest coal-exporting ports in the world. There are generally dozens of ships parked offshore, waiting to be loaded.
4. Hobart

Answer: Derwent

In 1975, the large ore carrier, Lake Illawarra, ran into the Tasman Bridge, the major crossing over the Derwent, and sank. Several sailors died, as did five motorists who drove into the void.
5. Canberra

Answer: Molonglo

The Molonglo is dammed to form Lake Burley Griffin, the waterway that sits right in the middle of the national capital.
6. Adelaide

Answer: Torrens

The River Torrens is only short, about 85kms, but it was the major factor for the selection of the site of the South Australian capital, in 1836.
7. Brisbane

Answer: Brisbane

Thomas Brisbane was the Governor of New South Wales in 1825 when the settlement was established. It was set up as a penal settlement, with prisoners being transported from Sydney.
8. Rockhampton

Answer: Fitzroy

Rockhampton (Rocky, to the locals) is on the Tropic of Capricorn, and also on the Fitzroy. The area around the Queensland city is known for its beef industry. In 2014, its population pushed past the 80,000 mark.
9. Albury and Wodonga

Answer: Murray

Albury (New South Wales) and Wodonga (Victoria) are twin cities near the headwaters of the Murray. The river is the longest in Australia, and forms the border between the two states, before flowing into Lake Alexandrina in South Australia.
10. Devonport

Answer: Mersey

Devonport is a small city on the north coast of Tasmania, with a frontage onto Bass Strait.

The river is named after the Mersey in northern England, made famous by Gerry and the Pacemakers.
