Plovdiv was founded by the Ancient Greeks in BC 342 and called Philippopolis, after Philip II of Macedon, the father of Alexander the Great. Varna is Bulgaria's 3rd city. Veliko Turnovo was the capital from about 1185 till 1393, when the country was incorporated into the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire. Plovdiv has a very beautiful, fairly well preserved Old City ('Stari Grad') situated on a rock that towers above the modern city. Veliko Turnovo has dramatic changes in height and is surrounded by hills and forests.

The annual Gross Domestic Product divided by the the population is about $7,033 (2012 estimate). (Adjusted for purchasing power, the figure is about $16,000). The country took longer than some other former Soviet Bloc countries to rid itself of Communism (1989-92) and the economy was adversely affected by the wars in the former Yugoslavia: the main overland routes from Central Europe to Istanbul (and on to Asia) led straight through Sofia and Plovdiv, and these trade routes have been disrupted. Prices are lower than in Western Europe or the US, but living standards are low.
