Answer: Coppermines Youth Hostel

Copper has been mined in this area since Roman times. The mine shafts are known to have been sunk 1,000 feet below the surface but are now flooded and the wooden platforms rotten. Exploration of them is not recommended in any way, shape or form for those who wish to remain in the land of the living.

Answer: River Crake

The River Crake flows from the south end of Coniston Water until it joins the River Leven. The River Leven drains Lake Windermere. The River Eamont is the outflow from Ullswater which feeds into the River Eden. The River Greta is tributary of the River Derwent, the outflow of Derwentwater.

All four listed peaks are found in the fells to the west of Coniston. Swirl How is officially 802m high although there are rumours that resurveying has found it to be 804m. For the record Brim Fell is 796m, Wetherlam 762m and Dow Crag 778m. In English those heights are 2633 ft (Old Man), 2630 ft (Swirl How), 2,502 ft (Wetherlam) and 2555 ft (Dow Crag).
The "Old Man of Coniston" is riddled with mine shafts, all very dangerous to explore.

Grizedale forest park is managed by the forestry commission (as indeed are the others listed). It has excellent views from Carron Crag over Coniston Water towards Coniston fells and to the South as far as Morecombe Bay. It consists of 6,000 acres, (the Forestry Commission website claims 2,447 hectares), of woodland including cycling and walking routes.

The more sensible route lies walking around the ridge via Goat's Hawse. Beyond Dow Crag the ridge continues to Buck Pike and Brown Pike. Then a clear path descends to the highest point of the Walna Scar Road.
