Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. St. Louis' downtown is centered around the graceful Arch, marking the "Gateway to the West". Which St. Louis river was the route for the first westward explorers?

Answer: Missouri

St. Louis' Gateway Arch is the tallest manmade monument in the U.S. at 630 feet (192 m). This flattened catenary arch is clad in shiny stainless steel and is the most recognized landmark of St. Louis.
2. The downtown area of which Middle Eastern city contains the Dome of the Rock?

Answer: Jerusalem

Jerusalem is a sacred city to at least three of the major world religions. The site of the Dome of the Rock is sacred to Muslims as the place that Muhammad ascended to heaven; to Jews as the place that Abraham prepared to sacrifice his son; and to Christians as the site of the Second Temple, so important in the life of Jesus.
3. The downtown area of which Southeast Asian city contains the Petronas Twin Towers?

Answer: Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur's Petronas Towers became the tallest twin buildings in the world when they opened in 1996. Chicago's Willis (Sears) Tower has more floors and has the tallest roof of the two structures, but spires on the Petronas Towers are included in the official height of buildings, while the antennas atop the Willis Tower are not.
4. The downtown area of which world capital contains a place whose native name is pronounced in English as "Krasnaya Ploschad"?

Answer: Moscow

Moscow's Red Square is the location of the St. Basil's Cathedral, probably the most recognizable Russian location with its polychrome onion domes. The Russian word "krasnaya" can mean "beautiful", and it was this meaning that first attached to St. Basil's and later included the entire square. "Krasnaya" also means "red", but the name has no connection either to communism or the color of the stones that make up most of the square.
5. The downtown area of which seaside city includes the Transamerica Pyramid?

Answer: San Francisco

The Transamerica Tower became the tallest building in San Francisco when it opened in 1972. Although no longer the headquarters of Transamerica insurance and investment company, the building retains their name and appears on the company logo. Unfortunately, there is no public access to the building beyond the first floor; the top floors have breathtaking views of the San Francisco Bay area and Pacific Ocean.
6. The downtown area of which Asian city contains the Forbidden City?

Answer: Beijing

Beijing's Forbidden City served as the imperial palace and center of Chinese government for over 500 years. Modern Chinese refer to the site as "Gugong" meaning "former palace", and is home to the Palace Museum.
7. The downtown area of which European capital contains a risqué tourist attraction known as the "Rosse Buurt" in the district of "De Wallen"?

Answer: Amsterdam

The Red Light district ("Rosse Buurt") of Amsterdam has been known for prostitution since at least the 14th century. Prostitution has been legal in The Netherlands since 1811, but modern efforts to "clean up" the Red Light District has led to tourists slowly replacing customers. Remaining are the hundreds of one-room apartments with large glass windows or doors for advertising the wares.
8. Downtown Tokyo contains a large, upscale district for shopping, fashion and entertainment. What is this district known as?

Answer: Ginza

The Ginza was destroyed by fire in 1872 and was rebuilt as a "model of modernization" in a Japan newly opened to the West. The modern Ginza contains a wide variety of high-end shopping, dining and entertainment venues. On weekends from noon to 5pm, the busy streets are closed to vehicles and shoppers enjoy a "pedestrian heaven".
9. Tahrir Square is the downtown focal point of which African capital city?

Answer: Cairo

Tahrir ("Liberation" or "Martyr") Square is the major public area of downtown Cairo. Location for national government buildings, the headquarters of the Arab League and the American University make it a popular location for demonstrations and protests, including those of the Egyptian Revolution of 2011.
10. "El Ángel de la Independencia" sits atop a victory column on the boulevard Paseo de la Reforma in which Latin American capital?

Answer: Mexico City

"El Ángel" looks over Mexico City and honors the heroes of the Mexican War of Independence (1810-1821). The column is 118 ft (36 m) high, topped with the 22 ft. (6.7 m), 7-ton bronze angel covered in 24-karat gold. An internal staircase leads to an observation room that gives a grand view of the sprawling Mexico City.
