Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where should we travel to in order to see the Wadi al-Hitan, or Whale Valley?

Answer: Egypt

The Whale Valley in Egypt, Africa is on the desert floor of the Wadi al-Hitan. It is situated south of the great city of Cairo. This valley has numerous fossils that belonged to the last whales known to have had legs. These remarkable fossils are what remain to reveal how land-based whales made their transition to the great mammals of the oceans of today.
2. The Great Rift Valley, located in East Africa, sits amid four countries. Which of the four has a section that divides the country into two segments?

Answer: Kenya

The Great Rift Valley is 9,656 kilometers long and stretches from Lebanon all the way to Mozambique. A section of this valley slices through and divides Kenya into two segments, the Western Highlands from the lowland coastal strip. Subterranean forces tore the crust of the earth apart because of the extreme violence that they produced. Huge portions of the earth's crust sank between fault lines forcing molten rock to erupt.

This is called rifting and still occurs today.
3. Where in India would you go to find the Valley of Flowers National Park?

Answer: Uttarakhand

The very beautiful Valley of Flowers National Park is situated in Uttarkhand, India, in the West Himalayan area. This valley is a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage Site with no settlement there. Due to heavy snow, this area is only opened from June to October.

There are well over five hundred species of flowers that grow here which include such beauties as orchids, primulas, calundulas, daisies and much more. The ground is a gorgeous carpet of anemones with meadows known for alpine flowers and a beauty that can take your breath away.

Many rare and endangered animals live in this area such as the snow leopard and the blue sheep. This valley park covers an area of over 87 square kilometers.
4. Please tell me which island country is home to the Vinales Valley.

Answer: Cuba

Vinales Valley, located in Cuba, is a karstic depression which means it has irregular limestone that has eroded to create some sinkholes, many underground streams, lovely caverns and also fissures. This valley is 132 square kilometers in size and is found in the Sierra de los Organos.

This is north of Vinales in the province of Pinar del Rio. There are obvious cliffs that seem to rise like islands from the bottom of the valley upward. They are called mogotes. In 1999, UNESCO designated this site as a World Heritage Site.
5. Let's go to South America to view La Gran Sabana. In which country can we find this beautiful valley?

Answer: Venezuela

The valley known as the Gran Sabana is located in Venezuela, South America. The climate is both tropical and humid. This picturesque valley sits on a plateau at 1,000 meters above sea level. This natural attraction is surrounded by table-top mountains which are called tepuis. Mount Roraima at 2, 810 meters above sea level, is the tallest. Tepuis can be seen only in south Venezuela.

These huge formations are rare structures which safely harbor vegetation and animal life.
6. I hope that you know where the Valley of the Moon (Valle de la Luna) is located. Where is it?

Answer: Chile

The Valley of the Moon is located in the driest area on Earth, which is in Chile's Atacama Desert. Through the centuries, floods and winds have created remarkable formations of stone and sand. The colors and the texture looks so much like the Moon's surface. Valle de la Luna was declared a Nature Sanctuary in 1982.

It is also part of the Reserve Nacional los Flamencos. Some areas of this amazing valley have not had even one drop of rain in hundreds of years, so it is considered to be one of the driest places in the world.
7. The valley known as Semuc Champey is like a paradise, but where is it?

Answer: Guatemala

Semuc Champey is considered as a natural monument in Alta Verapaz, Guatemala. This splendid and beautiful valley has its own natural 300 meter long bridge of limestone. This bridge passes the Cahabon River and has a series of many turquoise pools of water.

The Cahabon River flows down into a network of several caves and eventually spilling out of the bottom of a mountain. There are many waterfalls which spill into the pools with gentle beauty. It is like a tropical paradise which lies near the town of Lanquin.
8. Known for its annual Apple Blossom Festival, the Annapolis Valley is located in which country?

Answer: Canada

The Annapolis Valley is situated in the western part of Nova Scotia, Canada. The valley was formed by a trough which is between two parallel mountain ranges. Located along the shores of the Bay of Fundy this valley is approximately 126 kilometers long.

A "micro climate" has been produced due to the shelter provided by the mountains. This means that the climate is mild and the soil consists of fertile glacial sediment. Both vegetable and fruit crops grow extremely well here. Annapolis Valley is famous because of its enormous apple crops with over a thousand apple farms.

The aroma is amazing in the springtime when the apple blossoms are in full bloom.
9. Bohinj Valley is known as a glacial valley. Where is this beautiful valley to be found?

Answer: Slovenia

In the middle of Triglay National Park and Julian Alps is Bohinj Valley, Slovenia. There are four main parts to this valley which are Lower Valley, Upper Valley, Ukanc Bain and Nomenj Basin. Historically, it is said that this valley was a dwelling place for people during the Bronze Age. There are mountain climbing tours in the Bohinj Valley as well as swimming, biking, kayaking, etc.

There is a myth associated with the valley in which during the beginning of mankind God missed a group of people when He was distributing land to the people of earth. These people didn't make a fuss about it and when God realized he had missed them He was most appreciative of their patience so he gave them the "most amazing" section of land which God had been saving for Himself. This last was, of course, Bohinj. The name was derived from the word "Boh" which, of course, means "God".
10. The Baliem Valley, once nicknamed Shangri La, is both lush and fertile. In which country is this glorious valley located?

Answer: Indonesia

The Baliem Valley is surrounded all the way around by peaks as high as approximately 3,000 meters. Farming in this valley has existed for as many as 9,000 years. The valley has three main tribes. The Dani, Lani and Yali tribes, each with their own culture, dwell in this valley.

The Dani and the Lani are expert farmers of abundant crops such as tobacco, taro, sugar cane, bananas, sweet potatoes, and more. The sweet potato gardens seem to create a checkerboard pattern amid this glorious oasis.

The Yali people prefer to dwell in wooden huts with tree-bark roofs along the valley ridges of the Jayawijaya mountains. They keep vegetable gardens which surround their compounds.
