Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the capital city of the U.S.' southernmost territory, American Samoa?

Answer: Pago Pago

Pago Pago, although small, was created as a harbor for the U.S. Navy during WWII. Although the island (and surrounding area) contains its resident tribes, much of the population lives in and around Pago Pago, a seaside town known for tourism and beautiful beaches. Because of the importance of Pago Pago Harbor to the local economy, it is maintained meticulously and takes particular precedence, especially during harsh South Pacific storms and tsunamis.

The town sits under Rainmaker Mountain.
2. What town in Washington state is a Native American term which translates to 'Place of Many Waters'?

Answer: Walla Walla

At one point Washington's largest city (nearly two centuries ago at the height of a gold rush in Idaho), Walla Walla has since become a friendly town near the border of Oregon. Aside from the natural beauty of Fort Walla Walla Park, the town also boasts several vineyards in its surrounding area bringing in the majority of tourist money for the region.
Walla Walla, Washington was the birthplace of TV's Adam West. There is also a Walla Walla in New South Wales, Australia.
3. What German spa town with a double name can be found in the Black Forest region?

Answer: Baden-Baden

Found in Baden-Württemberg in Southwest Germany, Baden-Baden translates to 'Bath-Bath'; it took the double name in the seventeenth century after two areas, both named Baden, joined together. Now a thriving resort town in the Black Forest region, Baden-Baden is home to luxurious accommodations, casinos, castles, and a museum dedicated to a collection of Fabergé items. Spielbank, Baden-Baden's oldest casino, is one of the most famous in Germany.
4. What Australian town in New South Wales between Sydney and Melbourne is on the Murrumbidgee River?

Answer: Wagga Wagga

The Murrumbidgee River, a tributary of the Murray River, cuts directly through the city of Wagga Wagga, a name which allegedly means 'Place of Many Crows'. With a history stretching back to the 1820s, Wagga Wagga is an interesting place for sports fans-- many of Australia's famous sporting faces have their origins in Wagga Wagga.

It's also a wonderful place to swim; a number of beaches can be found in the city along the Murrumbidgee. The area was originally inhabited by the Wiradjuri and it's nearly equidistant to both Sydney and Melbourne.
5. What is the name of the capital city of Mozambique's Gaza Province known for its beach (Praia) and coral reefs?

Answer: Xai-Xai

Xai-Xai, one of the more populated cities of Mozambique, sits on the Indian Ocean along the east coast of Africa. A few hours away from the nation's capital Maputo, it's a spot for sun and fun-- aside from the beautiful beach and high-quality snorkeling sites, it features vibrant marketplaces and open-air establishments to go part-and-parcel with its typically hot weather. Praia do Xai-Xai, the beach on the coast, is one of the country's foremost resort spots, still far enough from the city center (about ten kilometers) to be secluded and unspoiled.
6. Found at the end of the line for trains from Kolkata, which of these is an Indian city in West Bengal?

Answer: Dum Dum

Found northwest of the major city of Kolkata, India, Dum Dum has an interesting history in artillery, particularly because it was the birthplace of the dum dum hollow point bullet. On an adverse note, Dum Dum Fever, also known as Leishmaniasis, a sandfly-spread disease, may have been named after the area, but it didn't originate there.

While Kolkata's population is higher than 4.5 million people, Dum Dum is only a smaller neighbourhood and contains a fraction of the people (about one in forty).

Another neighbourhood in Kolkata, located on the Ganges, is named Budge Budge.
7. What Australian double-named town is adjacent to the Brisbane Water National Park in New South Wales?

Answer: Woy Woy

Australia is chock-full of these names, mainly because they derive from Australian Aboriginal words or phrases. Woy Woy, for instance, means 'big lagoon'. This makes sense-- the town is situated on the coast of the Tasman Sea, and a great number of lagoons and waterways can be found therein. It's about an hour away from Sydney.
Mooney Mooney is also on the edge of Brisbane Water National Park. So is Marramarra Creek. It confuses me a bit too. The other incorrect answers are also all in Australia.
8. What New Zealand town on the nation's North Island contains the set for The Shire from the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy?

Answer: Matamata

While Matamata was known locally as a rural area for horse breeding in the years before Peter Jackson and Co. stepped in, it has since become a major tourist destination for all things Tolkien; visitors can actually visit the hobbit holes of The Shire if they stop by. Following the release of the "Lord of the Rings" films (and later, "The Hobbit"), Hobbiton was kept open to increase town revenue. Matamata is one of many towns in New Zealand with a double name; many of them are based on Maori words.

It can be found in the Waikato region northwest of Rotorua. There is similar Matamata out there though-- Matmata is a town in Tunisia. Mata mata is also a South American turtle.
9. What double-named island in French Polynesia, considered a luxury resort locale of the ages, is known for its huts on the water?

Answer: Bora Bora

Bora Bora, an island to the northwest of Tahiti, is an island paradise. Formed around a volcano and crystalline lagoon, the island is dotted with sandy beaches and unique resorts, most notably featuring thatched huts built over serene waters. Although early on, the island was used for coconuts and as a U.S. military base, it has since been dominated by tourism. Bora Bora is part of the chain of islands known as the Society Islands along with Tetiaroa, Tahiti, and Motu One; it is a Leeward Island.
10. A conservation area and UNESCO World Heritage Site, what is the name of a now-extinct volcanic crater in Tanzania?

Answer: Ngorongoro

One of several UNESCO sites in Tanzania (including the Serengeti), Ngorongoro Crater is a lush, verdant landscape, home to many different species of African animals and Maasai tribes. Ngorongoro is the largest extinct volcanic crater anywhere on the globe and after millions of years it became an important site for animals of all sorts. Also nearby is the Olduvai Gorge, studied by scientists for years due to its importance in evolutionary studies and prominence of fossilized remains, preserved by ash deposits. All of this is near the Great Rift Valley.
