Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mainland Europe's westernmost point is Cabo da Roca, a rocky cape located in what peninsular nation?

Answer: Portugal

Cabo da Roca can be found in the town of Sintra, Portugal, which is famous for its many castle and cathedrals. There are many giant granite boulders in Cabo da Roca, making it difficult for boats to navigate.
2. Which aptly named Norwegian place is mainland Europe's northernmost point?

Answer: Cape Nordkinn

Cape Nordkinn is in the Finnmark county of Norway. It cannot be accessed by vehicle or boat, so the only way to reach it is by a two-day hike through rocky terrain, and that is only if the weather is clear. Rain and fog make the path completely unnavigable, even with a GPS.
3. Including the European part of Russia east of the Caucasus Mountains, what is Europe's tallest mountain?

Answer: Mount Elbrus

Modern-day authorities consider the Caucasus Mountains as the dividing point between Europe and Asia, making Mount Elbrus the highest peak on the continent. It is a dormant volcano that rises 18,510 feet above sea level on the Russian border with Georgia.
4. Not far from Europe's highest peak is Europe's lowest point. In which body of water, which is also Europe's largest "lake", can this lowest place be found?

Answer: Caspian Sea

The Caspian Sea is technically a lake because it is enclosed by land on all sides. A sea is not. The confusion likely comes from the ancient people who lived nearby: since the Caspian Sea is very large, they originally thought it was an ocean. The Caspian Sea goes as deep as -92 feet.
5. Which river, whose tributaries pass through Moscow, is Europe's longest and most voluminous in terms of water flow?

Answer: The Volga

The Volga runs for 2,294 miles through Russia, flowing through many of the country's largest cities. It discharges 284,636 cubic feet of water per second. The Russians sometimes call the Volga "Mother Volga", and the river features prominently in many Russia works of literature and art.
6. In which historic province of Spain can one find Punta de Tarifa, mainland Europe's southernmost point?

Answer: Cadiz

Punta de Tarifa is so far south it can be seen from Morocco on clear days. During the 20th century, Punta de Tarifa was used as a military base because of its strategic location near the Straits of Gibraltar.
7. Europe is a mountainous continent, but modes of transportation cannot always reach the peaks of Europe's beautiful mountains. Which mountain contains Europe's highest point accessible by cable car?

Answer: Klein Matterhorn

The Klein Matterhorn, despite its names, is not the same thing as the more famous Matterhorn, although tourists often make that mistake because of its name and proximity to the actual Matterhorn. The railcar does not reach the zenith of Klein Matterhorn, but stops just short of it at 12,533 feet, about 200 feet before the peak.
8. Although there are dozens of claimants to the title of the geographic center of Europe, "The Guinness Book of World Records" states the exact center of Europe (including all its islands) is in which country?

Answer: Lithuania

Specifically, the exact center of Europe is in the town of Purnuškės near the capital Vilnius. This was determined in the 1980s by the French National Geographic Institute. A dozen other countries claim that the exact center of Europe is within their boundaries and use different methods and formulas to determine this.
9. Russia is Europe's largest nation by area. But what is Europe's largest nation that lies entirely within the continent?

Answer: Ukraine

Ukraine is 233,062 square miles in area. In addition to Russia, France is also larger than Ukraine but only when counting its overseas territory as France's European land is smaller than Ukraine.
10. True or false? The largest true desert in Europe is the Karakum.

Answer: False

There are no true deserts in Europe. There are, however, several semi-deserts, like the Tabernas Desert in Spain, and man-made deserts like the Bledow Desert in Poland, which was formed after humans drained most of the water from it in the Middle Ages.
