Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Latitude 19: Mexico City, Mexico lies on the same latitude as this Indian city. Ranking as the most populous city in India in 2012, it is also India's commercial and entertainment center. Where in India am I?

Answer: Mumbai

Formerly known as Bombay, Mumbai lies on the west coast of India and is the fourth most populous urban area in the world. According to the 2011 census, Mumbai's population stood at 12,479,608. This city is also India's richest city and has the highest GNP of any city in the southern, western, and central parts of Asia.
2. Latitude 34: Adelaide is the capital city of the state of South Australia. It is on roughly the same line of latitude as another state capital city - one that is often mistakenly believed to be the capital city of Australia. Which city is this?

Answer: Sydney

Sydney, the capital city of NSW, is often confused with Canberra, which is the capital city of Australia. In 1788, settlement by Europeans first sprang up around what was to become Sydney, hence this confusion. Until 1901, Australia consisted of separate colonies, and it wasn't until 1901 that these all combined to form the one nation we know today as the Commonwealth of Australia. From that date, and up until the site for Canberra was decided upon, Melbourne in Victoria was actually our country's temporary capital. Long and sometimes acrimonious has been the rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne ever since. Well, as acrimonious as it is possible for an Australian to become. That usually boils down to "Get lost, mate. Buy yer own beer."
3. Latitude 35: Tehran is the capital city of Iran and is located on the same line of latitude as the capital city of an Asian country which experienced an horrific meltdown or two in 2011. Can you name this capital city?

Answer: Tokyo

Tokyo, the capital of Japan, lies on the island of Honshu. It is one of the most populated cities in the world. Along with London and New York, it is also one of the most economically important cities in the world. It's been described as the fourth most sought over city in which to live - but also the second most expensive.
4. Latitude 38: Lisbon, Portugal lies on the same latitude as this United States city that was designed by French born architect Pierre Charles L'Enfant. The city has many famous and beautifully constructed buildings, and streets such as Pennsylvania and Washington avenues are well-known. Where in the United States am I?

Answer: Washington D. C.

Congress' 1790 Residence Act gave approval for the creation of the new federal city of the United States. The states of Maryland and Virginia donated land, and the initial shape of Washington D. C. was to be a square measuring 10 miles on each side, making the area 100 square miles. During 1791-92, the area was surveyed, and boundary stones were placed at every mile point, many of which are still standing today.
5. Latitude 39: Beijing in China lies on the same latitude as this Eurasian city made famous by goats, rabbits and a breed of cat. Although not as large as Istanbul, it still remains the capital city for its country. Where am I?

Answer: Ankara

Ankara is situated towards the centre of Turkey where south eastern Europe meets western Asia. It is and was the centre of Turkey's trade. Mohair from shaggy goats and wool from white rabbits are synonymous with the Angora (Ankara) region. The domestic Angora cat is also referred to as the "Ankara" and is similar to the Persian breed and Turkish Van. Watch out for the beautiful pure white Angora cat with one green and one blue eye which is considered to be a national treasure and part of a breeding programme in Turkey since 1917 to protect these odd-eyed animals.
6. Latitude 45: Venice in Italy lies on the same latitude as this Canadian city. Home base for Cirque du Soleil, this mainly French speaking city is situated on an island and was originally called Ville-Marie meaning "City of Mary". Where in Canada am I?

Answer: Montreal

Montreal is the second largest city in Canada. Lying on an island just to the north of New York state and with the close proximity of the St Lawrence and Ottawa rivers, it has always been prominent in trade, manufacturing and shipping. The current name of Montreal was taken from "Mount Royal", the hill where you can climb to get a stunning view of the city below.
7. Latitude 52: From Birmingham in England, let's pop across the North Sea to this European city which falls along the same latitude. This city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to the largest Van Gogh collection in the world. Where in Europe am I?

Answer: Amsterdam

The capital of The Netherlands, Amsterdam, is famous for its inland waterway system, museums and red light district. The 17th century Canal Ring is a waterway district in Amsterdam which houses many buildings of interest including the Anne Frank House and Museum. The area became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.
8. Latitude 52: Birmingham in England is also on the same line of latitude as another European city that, over the course of its history, has been the capital of several different entities but all within the same area. Think before you shoot, Charlie. Which capital city is this?

Answer: Berlin

Poor old Berlin definitely has undergone an identity crisis or six. It has been the capital of Prussia, the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, the German Democratic Republic, and finally, as at 1990, the capital city once again of a united Germany. You just have to admire the people of this amazing and history filled world capital city for their endurance and sense of unity.

The Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie are no more.
9. Latitude 55: If I start in Edinburgh, Scotland and head due east through Copenhagen, Denmark, I will soon reach this major capital. It is home to an ancient fortress, a colourful square and a world famous ballet company. What city am I in?

Answer: Moscow

Moscow is the capital of Russia and has a population of over ten million people. The site of the Kremlin dates back to the 2nd century BC and is now the official residence of the Russian President. Next to this is Red Square, what was once the main market place and scene of many coronations. There are certainly plenty of places to visit in Moscow, and after a weary day walking the streets, why don't you spend a relaxing evening at the Bolshoi Theatre?
10. Latitude 59: Oslo, the capital of Norway, can be found on the same line of latitude as a major Russian city which has undergone several name changes in recent history. Do you know which one it is, comrade?

Answer: Saint Petersburg

This beautiful city is located on the Gulf of Finland, near the Baltic Sea. Founded by Peter the Great at the beginning of the 1700s, it was once the capital city of Russia, until the centre of government was moved to Moscow in 1918. Its name was changed to Petrograd in 1914, to Leningrad in 1924, and back to Saint Petersburg in 1991. How confusing for its residents.

They wouldn't know whether to salute the flag, pray fervently, or have another revolution.
