Answer: Brazil

The mighty Amazon River starts in the Andes Mountain and flows 6,400km towards the Atlantic ocean, travelling through Peru, Colombia and Brazil. Pico da Neblina is a national park which also features the highest mountain in Brazil, called by the same name as the park. Standing at 2,994m high, it can be found in the north-west of the country. The image shows the popular 4km long Copacabana Beach, situated in Rio de Janeiro near to the famous Sugar Loaf Mountain.
2. Loa is the longest river in which South American country that also features Ojos del Salado, and is the nearest landmass to these familiar monuments?

Answer: Chile

The 440km Loa River is the longest river in Chile. Starting at the base of the Andes, it travels through the Atacama desert, believed to be the driest desert in the world, before reaching the Pacific Ocean. Standing at 6,893m high, Ojos del Salado is the highest volcano in the world, and the tallest mountain in Chile. The image shows the incredible stone monuments on Easter Island, situated in the Pacific Ocean. The island belongs to Chile, and the statues are called "moai".

Answer: Ecuador

The Napo River travels from its source near the Cotopaxi Mountain for 1075km until it reaches the Pacific Ocean. Cotopaxi is the second largest mountain in Ecuador, but the tallest is called Chimborazo, standing at 6,268m high in the Andes mountain range. The image shows the Galapagos Islands, famously studied by Charles Darwin on his trip on HMS Beagle.

Rio Magdalena is the longest river in Colombia, stretching from the Colombian Massif for 1,528km until it reaches the Caribbean Sea. Named after Christopher Columbus, the 5,700m high Pico Cristobal Colon is the tallest mountain in Colombia and is situated at the north of the country. The Quindio wax palm is the tallest palm in the world and can be seen in Cocora Valley, part of the Los Nevados National Park.

The longest river in Argentina is the 4,880km long Rio Parana which also traverses through Brazil and Paraguay. The highest peak of Argentina, and all the Americas, is Mount Aconcagua in the Andes mountain range, towering approximately 6,960m high. The capital city, Buenos Aires, is home to the unusual Floralis Generica, a steel flower designed by Eduardo Catalano.

Answer: Venezuela

The Orinoco River travels for 2,140km, the majority through Venezuela and the rest through Colombia. At 4,978m high, Pico Bolivar is the tallest mountain in the country and named after Simon Bolivar. It is also home to one of the highest cable cars in the world. The image is that of Angel Falls, a 979m high waterfall in the southeast of Venezuela.

Travelling through Brazil and Bolivia for 3,250km, the Madeira is a tributary of the great Amazon River. The Nevado Sajama is an extinct volcano which is situated at the west of the country, reaching approximately 6,542m high. The image is a photo taken at Laguna Colorada, a salt lake containing borax. The white borax contrasts with red algae in the lake, giving the water of the lake a colourful appearance.

The Uruguay starts its course in Brazil and then flows through Argentina until finally reaching Uruguay, travelling a total of 1,600km before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean. Cerro Catedral, or Cathedral Hill, is the tallest peak in Uruguay, reaching just over 513m. It is located in the south of the country. The image is of Casapueblo, a house belonging to and designed by the artist, Carlos Paez Vilaro. It was built in honour of the artist's son who died on the 1972 Andes plane disaster which also killed the country's rugby team.

The Ucayali River runs for 1,900km from the Peruvian Andes towards the Amazon. It is home to the Amazon River dolphin, a freshwater mammal that can be seen in several rivers in South America. In the western Andes you can find Huascaran, a 6,768m high mountain with two summits popular to climbers. The image is of Machu Picchu, a site built by the Incas in the 15th century. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and is visited by thousands of tourists each year.
10. Oyapock River and the Bellevue de l'Inini Mountain can be found in which South American region which is also home to this space station?

Answer: French Guiana

The Oyapock River travels 370km through French Guiana from the Tumuk Humak range of mountains until it filters into the Atlantic. Bellevue de l'Inini is located in the west-central region and stands at 851m high. The Centre Spatial Guyanais (CSG) is a European space station based at Kourou near the northeastern coastline. Ariane rockets have been successfully launched from here since 1979.
