Answer: Frankfurt

Frankfurt has been a major commercial and financial center since the Middle Ages. It also has Germany's busiest airport and is the seat of European Central Bank - the central bank of the Euro.
3. How many states (Länder) does Germany have?

Answer: 16

The states are: Baden-Württemberg, Bayern, Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Hessen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Niedersachsen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland, Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein and Thüringen.
4. What is the full official name of Germany?

Answer: Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesrepublik Deutschland)

The name 'Deutsche Bundesrepublik' was that used for the Federal Republic (West Germany) by the former German Democratic Republic (East Germany) and is best avoided.
5. Germany has three city-states. Which of these is NOT a city-state?

Answer: Frankfurt

Frankfurt lost its status as a city-state in 1866. Until 1933 Lübeck was also a city-state, but it was not revived as a state after WWII. In earlier centuries, the Holy Roman Empire had a large number of Free Cities, which were subject only to the Emperor. Well known examples included Frankfurt, Mainz, Aachen and Cologne as well as many of the leading Hanseatic ports.
6. What is the capital of Bavaria (Bayern)?

Answer: Munich

Other major cities in Bavaria include: Nuremberg (Nürnberg), Augsburg, Regensburg, Passau, Würzburg, Bamberg.
7. What was the population of Germany in 2011 (to the nearest million)?

Answer: 82 million

This figure includes foreigners resident in Germany.
8. On which river is Hamburg?

Answer: The Elbe

The Elbe rises in the Czech Republic as the Labe and flows into the North Sea near Cuxhaven. Other major cities on the Elbe include Dresden and Magdeburg. The other rivers are all well to the west of the Elbe.
9. Which of these cities is the capital of the state (Land) of Northrhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen)?

Answer: Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf is also a financial center of some significance.
10. Germany shares a land frontier with nine other countries. Which of these is NOT one of them?

Answer: Russia

Starting in the north and working round clockwise Germany borders on: Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands.
11. Which river is traditionally regarded as the dividing-line between North and South Germany?

Answer: The Main

Obviously, like all such dividing-lines, this is only a very rough guide and should not be taken entirely seriously.
12. Which of these ports is NOT on the Baltic Sea?

Answer: Emden

Until 1933 Lübeck was a city-state. An alliance made in 1241 between Lübeck and Hamburg formed the basis of the Hanseatic League. In the Middle Ages and the early modern period up to about 1600, Lübeck (not Hamburg) was the leading Hanseatic city.
13. Which state (Land) borders on both Poland and the Czech Republic?

Answer: Saxony (Sachsen)

The capital of Saxony is Dresden, which was bombed exceptionally severely in February 1945 for no good military reason.
14. What are the three colours of the German flag (from top to bottom)?

Answer: Black-red-gold

This has been the flag of Germany since 1949 and was the flag of the Weimar Republic (1919-33). The flag of 'Bismarckian' Germany was black-white-red, which were used again in the flag of the Third Reich.

Black-red-gold were the colours of the Holy Roman Empire and were used by many of the revolutionaries of 1848, especially those who favoured the creation of a 'Greater Germany' based on Austria rather than Prussia. On the whole, these were the more radical revolutionaries. (Don't be misled by later German history).
15. If one disregards countries with under one million inhabitants Germany is the most prosperous country in Europe measured in terms of the Gross Domestic Product divided by the population.

Answer: False

Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway and Switzerland all score more highly than Germany on this measure. (Information from data issued for 2011 by the IMF and the World Bank).
