1. What is the name of the lake that forms part of Germany's southern frontier?

Answer: Lake Constance

Switzerland and Austria also border on Lake Constance. The Rhine flows through the lake.

Answer: Danube

Major German cities on the Danube include Ulm, Regensburg and Passau. Further downstream the Danube flows through Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade.

Answer: The Weser

The Weser is formed at Hannoversch Münden (at the most southerly tip of Lower Saxony) by the confluence of the Werra and Fulda. Well known towns on the Weser include Hameln and Bremen. The Elbe rises in the Czech Republic as the Labe. Major cities on the Elbe include: Usti nad Labem (in the Czech Republic), Dresden, Wittenberg, Magdeburg and Hamburg.

The Oder rises in Poland and forms part of Germany's eastern frontier, while the Rhine rises in Switzerland and flows into the sea near Hoek van Holland.

Answer: Bavaria (Bayern)

Bavaria (Bayern) has a population of about 12 million. The most populous state (Land), however, is Northrhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen), with about 17 million inhabitants.

Answer: Hanover (Hannover)

Dresden, Magdeburg and Hamburg are all on the Elbe. Hanover is well to the west, on the Leine.

This state (Land) consists of Bremen and Bremerhaven. The two have a combined population of about 682,000.
9. Which of these places is NOT in Saxony (Sachsen)?

Answer: Stralsund

Stralsund is one of Germany's Baltic ports. The other three places are all in Saxony (Sachsen). Dresden is the capital, Leipzig is a major commercial centre with trade fairs and Meissen is well known as the home of porcelain.
10. What is the name of the most northerly German state (Land)?

Answer: Schleswig-Holstein

It is the only state that has a coastline on both the North Sea and the Baltic. Jütland is the name of the Jutland Peninsula, and isn't the name of any of the German states.
