Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The city of Tropea is found on the warm waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea in one of the southernmost regions of which European country?

Answer: Italy

Tropea is a beach-side town in the Calabria region of Italy, along its southern reaches (shortly before you cross over to Sicily. Although the region contains many mountains due to the obvious volcanic activity, its humid beachfronts are also a draw for travelers.

The coast is beautiful though; the Tyrrhenian, which makes up a great part of Western Italy's waterfront, is part of the Mediterranean. The Calabria region is known for its olives and wine. Its capital, Reggio Calabria, rests on the Strait of Messina.
2. Found in Palawan, what Philippine destination on the Sulu Sea features beautiful limestone cliffs?

Answer: El Nido

El Nido's cliffs are similar to those in nearby Southeast Asian nations such as Thailand and Vietnam-- the limestone and marble cliffs jutting out of the calm lagoons provide for beautiful beaches and resorts home to sunbathers and rock climbers. Palawan, the westernmost province in The Philippines, is across the Sulu Sea from Malaysia and is, for the most part, a protected ecosystem including coral reefs, mangrove jungles, and natural rock formations. El Nido is up toward the northeast part of the island.
3. There may be no greater remote paradise than Bora Bora, an island found in which Pacific group of islands?

Answer: French Polynesia

Bora Bora, a part of the French Polynesian Society Islands (along with Tahiti), has, since the second world war, evolved to become a major tourist hub in the South Pacific, evolving into a series of luxury resorts along (and on top of) the crystal clear waters.

Although many hotels surround the lagoon in the center of Bora Bora, perhaps the most stunning part is the extinct volcano rising from the center, visible from every part of Bora Bora and the surrounding seas.
4. Sure it's not sunny, but the water's warm. In which unlikely country would you expect to take a dip in the geothermic, heated waters of the Blue Lagoon?

Answer: Iceland

A resort and spa in one of the globe's northernmost countries, it's a bit surprising that the climate and environment of Iceland is the perfect spot for a getaway. The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal hotspot known for silica-rich mud and blue waters. Iceland is naturally stunning, even beside the Blue Lagoon. Aside from stunning waterfalls, verdant tracts of land, mountainous glaciers, and black-sand glacial beaches, Iceland is also home to active volcanoes and lava fields.

A true land of ice and fire, it's surprisingly temperate.
5. Taking a trip to the State of Pernambuco, you could make a stay in Fernando De Noronha, a beautiful archipelago off the coast of what country?

Answer: Brazil

Although the islands in Fernando De Noronha are part of Brazil, they're hundreds of miles off the northeast coast of South America. Considered a UNESCO Heritage Site since 2001, the location does have its share of luxurious, near-untouched beaches sitting at the bases of now-dormant volcanoes.

The waters here are warm and clear, creating the perfect spot for divers and swimmers alike. At one time, the island was home to dense jungle (and was visited by Charles Darwin). A century later it became a prison.

Another century later it became a protected ecological spot.
6. Plitvice Lakes National Park was deemed one of the first UNESCO Heritage Sites in the world and it's the perfect spot for an outdoor getaway in the mountains of which European nation?

Answer: Croatia

A series of lakes, waterways, and waterfalls in the karst region of Croatia, Plitvice Lakes is idyllic and mountainous, covered in forestland and canyons. For someone looking for a quiet spot in nature, this is the perfect spot-- several stretches of the forests here are relatively untouched, and protected.

There are many regulations in place, as there have been since the end of World War II, to save it from any possible outside influence. Although it rests near the Bosnian border to the east, it's also a short drive to the beautiful Adriatic coast to the west.
7. The waters of the lakes in Jiuzhaigou National Park can be so clear that you can see everything on the bottom. To visit this tranquil destination, what country would you have to travel to?

Answer: China

Located near the mountains on the Tibetan border, Jiuzhaigou is simply stunning in terms of natural beauty. A UNESCO site since 1992, the location is chock-full of deciduous forests and a series of near transparent lakes which can be seen to their depths.

The site is home to a great deal of ecotourism and protective action; it's one of the final homes of the Giant Panda. Getting there, however, can be an issue since much of the several hour-long route from Chengdu is unpopulated and poorly maintained.

But it's worth the trip.
8. From the surf beach to the awe-inspiring temples, Uluwatu is a wonderful vacation spot for culture and fun on which island?

Answer: Bali

Found in the southernmost section of Bali, south of the city of Denpasar, Uluwatu is a surfer's haven. Home to a perfect surf beach on the Bali Sea and a Balinese Sea Temple, Uluwatu is perched atop limestone cliffs. Bali is one of the most-visited islands in Indonesia, famous for its tourist spots, mainly beach-related. Undoubtedly, Uluwatu's surfs and swells are some of the best conditions for the sport anywhere in Southeast Asia. Uluwatu is found in Badung Regency, a part of the island notably fueled on tourism.
9. It's off to wine country. There's certainly nothing more relaxing than a getaway in the Loire Valley, a famous stretch of vineyards in what country?

Answer: France

Much of France is known for its history and its vineyards, and the Loire Valley is no exception considering its culturally-rich cities and commitment to viticulture. From here you can stop off at the cities of Amboise, Orleans, and Tours, their beautiful Gothic Cathedrals, and their welcoming wineries for a glass or two of red or white.

The Loire, France's longest river, is dotted by luxurious properties and extensive fields of wine grapes for nearly three hundred miles to the Atlantic Coast.
10. If you wanted to spend every last dime on a trip to Saint Barthélemy, to which part of the world would you be traveling?

Answer: Caribbean Sea

A territory of France, Saint Barthélemy is a part of the French West Indies along with Guadeloupe, Saint Martin, Martinique, and others. Known for being a hotspot for rich, famous vacation-goers, St. Barts has been ruled by the British, the Swedish, and the French; the French has the largest influence on the culture and style of tourism, however.

The accommodations and cuisine are of high caliber, especially for the Caribbean, and it's one of the costliest islands in Central America. It is, at the same time, a gorgeous paradise for anyone seeking a getaway.
