1. What is the administrative capital of Guadeloupe?

Answer: Basse-Terre

Pointe a Pitre is the largest town on Guadeloupe but Basse Terre is the capital. Capesterre is a town on Basse-Terre and Gosier is on Grande-Terre.
2. What is the name of the volcano on the island?

Answer: Soufriere

La Soufriere is Guadeloupe's volcano and is still active. Grande Terre is the name for the Eastern part of Guadeloupe and Basse Terre is the Western part which is where the volcano is. Les Mamelles are two fairly high hills which look a bit like a pair of breasts hence the name!
3. Who was the first European to set foot on Guadeloupe?

Answer: Christopher Columbus

Columbus was in need of fresh water in 1493 when he landed on Guadeloupe. He apparently also discovered the pineapple growing in Guadeloupe.
4. What is the official language of Guadeloupe?

Answer: French

Guadeloupe is an overseas department of France and so French is the official language.
5. What is the name of the channel which separates Basse-Terre from Grande-Terre?

Answer: Riviere Salee

The Riviere Salee is a salt water river. Salee is the French word for salted.
6. What is the currency of Guadeloupe?

Answer: Euro

Guadeloupe is an overseas department of France and so has the same currency as mainland France. The Eastern Caribbean dollar and the US dollar are used on some of the other islands in the Caribbean.

Answer: Place de la Victoire

Place de la Victoire is a large concrete square next to the harbour in Point a Pitre. It's a fascinating place especially when the fish market is on in the mornings.

Boudin is a sort of spicy blood pudding. Accras de morue is deep fried cod and colombo is a spicy dish made with chicken. They are all delicious!

Creole is the local patois in Guadeloupe and can be quite difficult to understand!

Answer: Chutes du Carbet

Les Chutes du Carbet are spectacular. It's a long walk to visit them but once you get there you can go for a swim in the pool at the bottom to cool down. There are also hot water springs which you can bathe in after.
