Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Scandinavian city was founded by King Gustav of Sweden in 1550 with the intent that it become a major world city to rival Reval of the Hanseatic League?

Answer: Helsinki, Finland

The settlement that became Helsinki failed at first as people struggled to get out of poverty after a series of plagues ravaged the city for decades. Reval, know called Tallinn, Estonia, greatly overshadowed Helsinki until Finland was taken over by Russians and the Finnish capital was moved to Helsinki in 1812.
2. When the city of Saigon fell in 1975, what name did it take on?

Answer: Ho Chi Minh City

Even before it was Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City was called Prey Nokor and it was an important sea port for the Vietnamese until French colonization in the 1600s. The city is named after Ho Chi Minh, who was the first president of the unified Vietnam, as well as President of North Vietnam.
3. Which Ancient Greek city is nearby the Ruins of Knossos and is the largest city on the island of Crete?

Answer: Heraklion

Heraklion loosely translates to Hercules' City, which is actually a reference to a city whose whereabouts are unknown. Heraklion is also known as Iraklion. Many of the ancient wonders of the city are still in existence, although their delicacy causes a problem for those who wish to preserve them.
4. Which Northern Chinese city is so famous for its winter festivities that it is nicknamed "The Ice City" and also has a distinct Russian flair to it?

Answer: Harbin

Harbin has had a tumultuous history and has been the target of invasions by both the Russians and the Japanese. Its location north of the other major cities in China transformed Harbin into a booming city, since traders would often stop in Harbin on their way to Beijing or Shanghai.

8. Which Latin American city is said to really be three cities in one, consisting of the Old City, the New Suburbs and the business district called Vedado?

Answer: Havana, Cuba

The Vedado is predominately the business district but also contains a small section of urban blocks, as well as a popular seawall called Malecón.
9. Which Dutch city shares its name (although spelled slightly differently) with a neighborhood in New York City and is a major city for tulips within the Netherlands?
