Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Christkindlesmarkts are typically found in which of these European nations?

Answer: Germany

Translating to 'Christ Child Market', the term Christkindlesmarkts is a German creation that is used to describe a market created during the days of Advent around the Christmas holiday season, so you're most likely to see them in Germany and surrounding nations (including Austria and Switzerland).

The most famous of these is in Cologne (receiving several million visitors per year) but there are also popular Christmas markets to be found in Nuremberg, Dortmund, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, and Dresden. Traditionally, they're European events and have been found in recorded history dating back to the fifteenth century (in Dresden with its Striezelmarkt).
2. The Christmas tree and skating rink in front of this New York City landmark are holiday staples. Where is the location depicted?

Answer: 30 Rockefeller Plaza

Also known as 30 Rock and the GE Building, this New York City landmark is known for being the home of NBC Studios (including the sets for "Saturday Night Live" and different iterations of "Late Night"). Its location in Midtown Manhattan places it close to the center of the city, being within walking distance of Fifth Avenue, Central Park, and Times Square.

The Christmas Tree is a landmark unto itself. Usually a Norway spruce brought in from a different town annually, the tree is lit by the city's mayor and dressed by a specially-designated committee.

It's placed between 30 Rock and a popular ice rink formed below.
3. Although it doesn't see snow, what Christmas location found in Palestine is home to the Church of the Nativity?

Answer: Bethlehem

Found in West Bank, the little town of Bethlehem is now a religious tourist site, but its history is notable because of its importance in the Bible. Home to the Church of the Nativity, it's a site of pilgrimage, especially during the Christmas season, because it's said to be the birth site of Jesus Christ. Annually, the city is home to Christmas processions though the days leading up to this are often met with festive events and shopping in local markets. Regrettably, in modern days, the city's location in Palestine has also made it a site of political unrest, though it hasn't stopped devout travellers.
4. The city of Leiden in the Netherlands is known for having a unique Christmas market built on which of these?

Answer: Canals

Christmas travellers should make a visit to Leiden, a university city in South Holland known for its canals and waterways, an hour out from Amsterdam. Undeniably, a number of European cities play host to Christmas markets, but very few are floating markets. Leiden's unique spot atop the canals allows visitors to travel on foot or by boat, though one would probably want to grab a pair of skates for the purpose-built ice rink.

The festival is not the city's claim to cultural fame though; it's also the birthplace of Rembrandt van Rijn.
5. The side of Monte Ingino becomes more festive during the wintertime when locals create 'the world's biggest Christmas tree' on it. Where is this peak?

Answer: Italy

Gubbio, a town in the Umbrian Apennine Mountains, ended up winning a Guinness Record in the 1990s for being home to the world's largest Christmas tree, but it wasn't all too conventional. Instead of chopping down a tree, this Italian town created their own, lighting up the side of the nearby Monte Ingino.

It's large enough to be seen more than fifty miles away. Traditionally, the tree has been lit in the first week of December and, in some years, the lights have been switched on by the reigning Pope.
6. The city of Rovaniemi, Finland, is home to which of these claims to fame?

Answer: Santa's Main Post Office

Found in Lapland in the north of Finland, the city of Rovaniemi is only a short walk from the geographical line that denotes the Arctic Circle, and it's here that it's alleged that Santa operates some of his business. Anyone visiting Rovaniemi can stop off at Santa Claus' Main Post Office, part of a larger amusement park known as Santa Claus Village which opened in 1985. Though many countries have their own Santa Villages, this Finnish spot is unique in that it's one of the few at which you can stand on the marked Arctic Circle and watch the Northern Lights. Oh yeah, and you can visit Santa there too, but you'll need to be there during his office hours.

He's a busy man.
7. During Christmas time, the city of Remedios is home to an explosive celebration of fireworks known as 'Las Parrandas de Remedios'. It's found on which island?

Answer: Cuba

Although the festivals have spread across the entire island nation of Cuba over the years, Remedios goes hard for several days leading up to Christmas with the intensity of light shows and fireworks increasing day by day. What results is a celebration of the festive season that can be seen and heard far and wide and which involves two halves of the city battling it out to have the louder and more explosive efforts.

These particular Parrandas were established in 1820 as an effort to bring more people to mass; now they're a famous (though dangerous) event.
8. One of the most-visited Christmas parks in Europe, which of these locations becomes a winter wonderland in Copenhagen, Denmark?

Answer: Tivoli Gardens

An amusement park in Copenhagen, Denmark's capital city, Tivoli Gardens is one of the oldest such parks in the world, having opened in the sixteenth century and kept up ever since. Special holidays like Halloween and Christmas get special treatment; the latter receives its own Danish Christmas market and gets decked out in holiday lights which cover trees, bridges, buildings (including a Chinese pagoda), and rides. Tivoli is a short distance from Downtown Copenhagen and is one of the top-most visited parks in the world.
9. What European city's Old Town is allegedly the site at which the first decorated Christmas tree was erected?

Answer: Riga, Latvia

The capital city of Latvia, Riga, wasn't the home of the first Christmas tree ever erected, but it was the first major city in which an annual decorated tree was put up. In traditions dating back to the year 1510, Riga citizens display a community tree in an area used for a seasonal market.

This UNESCO-protected city center now contains a marker and designated spot for the tree. Other records from the same century also show trees being used, at Christmastime, in Germany and nearby Baltic countries.
10. You might stop for a skate on the Patinoire du Vieux Port or sip warm cider in front of La Basilique Notre-Dame for Christmas in what non-European city, depicted?

Answer: Montreal

Although you could take a trip to the Christmas market in Toronto's Distillery District or the authentic Christkindl market in Kitchener, Ontario, the festivities of Montreal's Longueuil market provide an authentic look into the holiday season in French Canada. Montreal's city streets often become a winter wonderland, and it's one of the ideal times to marvel at the lights and architecture of the downtown area, home to La Basilique Notre-Dame and the picturesque Old Port.

The latter spot is where the skating rink is placed, right near the water's edge.
