Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Come on, Moses, let us begin by going to my hometown of East London. It's many years since I have lived there, but there's something special for you to see at the East London Museum. What is this something special we will find there?

Answer: Coelacanth

East London is situated in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa and the museum is the home to the first ceolacanth to be caught in the world. Until this specimen was caught off the Chalumna River near East London in 1938, the coelacanth had only been known from fossil remains and was believed to be extinct for some 80 million years.
2. From East London we head up to Grahamstown, situated inland from East London and also in the Province of the Eastern Cape. What name has been given to Grahamstown?

Answer: All of these

The city of Grahamstown has been given many picturesque names: the "City of Saints", because there are more than 40 places of worship here; "Sleepy Hollow", because it lies in a warm hollow in the hills; and "City of Schools", because of the great concentration of schools, and the Rhodes University which was named after Cecil John Rhodes, who was also the founder of the Rhodesia. Rhodesia was also named after him and is known as Zimbabwe.
3. Moving on from Grahamstown, Moses and I move back to the coast and end up in Port Elizabeth, where the 1820 settlers from Britain landed. What was built to commemorate these settlers?

Answer: Memorial Campanile

All of these are found in Port Elizabeth, but the 52 metre high Memorial Campanile was built in 1923 in memory of the 1820 settlers. It stands on the site where the settlers landed in Jetty Street at the exit of the docks. The campanile contains a carillon of 23 bells which ring changes three times a day.
4. Travelling on up the beautiful Garden Route, we arrive in Cape Town. Who founded Cape Town in 1652?

Answer: Jan van Riebeeck

Jan van Riebeeck joined the Dutch East India Company and in 1651 set sail for South Africa in three ships, the Dromedaris, Reijgr and the Goede Hoop. He landed in Cape Town on 6 April 1652 where he commenced building, planting fruit and vegetable gardens, and obtaining livestock from the native peoples.
5. No trip to Cape Town would be complete without seeing the famous or infamous island where Nelson Mandela, the first black president of South Africa, was imprisoned for 18 of his 27 years in prison. I am sure Moses would love to see this island. What is the name of the island?

Answer: Robben Island

All of the above are islands in the Cape area, but the most famous is Robben Island, a tiny island lying nine kilometres off the shore of Cape Town. It is three kilometres long and 1.5 kilometres wide, rising 35 metres above sea level. It has played an extraordinary part in the history of Cape Town and South Africa. Apart from being a maximum security prison, Robben Island has been used as an animal quarantine station, a provider of fresh fruit and vegetables, and a leper colony.
6. Back to Cape Town, and up Moses and I go in the cable car to the mountain. No, not the mountain where he received the ten commandments, but the stunningly beautiful Table Mountain. What is the name given by the locals to Table Mountain?

Answer: Old Grey Father

Table Mountain is a vast block of sandstone and is 1086 metres high. From a distance this great cliff appears to be unbroken, but close inspection reveals a deep cleft, Platteklip Gorge, splitting the mass from base to summit. There are more that 350 routes to the summit, ranging from easy scrambles (don't let them kid you, I did one and thought I was dying), to dangerous climbs.

The first recorded ascent of the mountain was in 1503 by Antonio de Saldana.
7. Now Moses, it's time to mosey along and visit the famous Winelands of the Cape, and where better to go than to the beautiful town of Stellenbosch? Not too much wine tasting, eh! How many mountains flank the town of Stellenbosch?

Answer: Four

Stellenbosch is flanked by four mountains: the Stellenbosch Mountain to the south, Great Drakenstein Mountains, Jonkershoek Mountains and Simonsberg to the east and south-east. Stellenbosch is also known as the "City of Oaks" and is the second oldest town in South Africa.
8. Tired of driving around, Moses and I decide to take a plane ride and go and visit the city of Durban situated on the East Coast of South Africa. What is the name of the airport which we arrive at?

Answer: King Shaka International Airport

The King Shaka International Airport opened on the 1st of May 2010, replacing the old Durban International Airport. The airport is named after Shaka Zulu, King of the Zulu Nation from 1816 - 1828; he was killed by his two half brothers, Mlangana and Dingane.
9. Having arrived in Durban, known as the "Pleasure-Seeker's City", Moses and I decide to take a walk along the three-kilometer beachfront strip and watch the waters of the Indian Ocean rolling in. What is the name of this popular strip?

Answer: The Golden Mile

The Golden Mile runs from the South Beach area right along to the Suncoast Casino at the end of North Beach. It is where visitors to the City of Durban can find amusement parks, a mini-town, an aerial cableway, an snake park, bowling greens, children's pools, a swimming bath, a sunken garden as well as numerous restaurants and snack bars.

A must to see is the Amphitheatre garden with its sunken garden with pools, fountains, lawns, flower beds, bridges and crazy paving.
10. Time to take Moses to one more place, and he has expressed an interest in seeing Bethlehem .... er ... we do have a Bethlehem in South Africa. What is the name of the river which flows through the valley of Bethlehem?

Answer: Jordaan River

Bethlehem lies in one of the valley's at the sandstone foothills of the Maluti Mountains in the Free State Province of South Africa. Wheat grew so well in the valley that early settlers established the town Bethlehem "Town of Bread" and aptly named the river flowing through the valley of Jordaan.
