Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The name of this region of Israel comes from the same root as the Hebrew word towel, because it is so dry.

Answer: Negev

The root N.G.V translates to wiping liquid off of something - the Negev is not only dry, but when it rains, the soil absorbs so poorly, that most of the water runs off to the sea, and doesn't become part of the aquifer.
2. The mountain range between Israel and Lebanon is called Sulam Tsor - The Ladder of Tyre. What is the reason for this?

Answer: It is broken up by rivers, and looks like a ladder.

This mountain range makes up the border between Israel and Lebanon. It is the source of many of northern Israel's rivers such as the Betzet, Kziv and others. Some of the most beautiful landscapes in Israel can be found here. Of course that is my subjective opinion.
3. What is the pool of water in the north, sometimes referred to as the Hermon's Eye, better known as?

Answer: Birkat Ram

Birkat Ram is thought to be a crater of an extinct volcano. It's clear blue waters and almost perfect circular shape make it a very popular tourist attraction.
4. The Hula Nature preserve is all that is left from what was once a vast...?

Answer: Swamp

The Hula preserve is an important stop for many migratory birds en route between Africa and Europe. There is also a small population of wild water buffalo (known as Jamusim) that make this area its home.
5. How was Makhtesh Ramon created?

Answer: It was a mountain the collapsed upon itself

Makhtesh Ramon is an open air Geological museum, with colored sands, fossils, and amazing wildlife. The Ramon visitors center in the town of Mitzpe Ramon serves as a museum, an educational center, and a starting point for many tours of the Makhtesh.
6. What mountain is the northern end of the coastal plain?

Answer: Mt Carmel

The Carmel is where Elijah stood up to the Prophets of Baal. A cave by the Bat Galim Beach, at the foot of the mountain is attributed to Elijah, and is a pilgrimage site for both Jews and Muslims.
7. What is the El-Al River famous for?

Answer: Its black waterfall, and its white waterfall.

Definitely a hike worth going on, this is one of the more visited rivers of the golan. Others include Meshushim, Gilabun and Dalyot, where you can find the highest waterfall, nesting vultures, and the ruins of the fortress of Gamla.
8. What section of Israel's name translates to "cylinder"?

Answer: The Gallil

The Galilee looks like a half cylinder in the ground, with the high mountains in its middle sloping down to the east and west. This is the area in Israel with the most rain fall, and therefore the most vegetation year round.
9. What is the largest forest in Israel?

Answer: Ya'ar Yatir

This forest is proving useful in combating desertification in the area.
10. Which of these rivers is a source of the Jordan River?

Answer: The Dan River

The Dan River flows year round, but gets most of its water in the spring from the snow melting off of Mt. Hermon.
