Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which Middle Eastern city would you find the highly venerated Wailing Wall?

Answer: Jerusalem

The Wailing Wall in Jerusalem was constructed during the reign of Herod the Great around 19 BCE. It is one of the most sacred sites in Judaism. The Wailing Wall commonly refers to a 187 ft. wall that is located on the west side of the Temple Mount in the part of Jerusalem known as "The Old City of Jerusalem".

It is a site of pilgrimage by those of the Jewish faith, and is set aside for prayer and reflection.
2. Sacsayhuaman is a large Incan wall complex that can be seen high above the city of Cuzco in which mountainous South American country?

Answer: Peru

Sacsayhuaman was laid out in the shape of a puma as was the city of Cuzco, as the puma was the animal that the Incas felt symbolized their culture and beliefs. The largest stones in this wall are at the bottom, and they slowly get smaller the higher in the wall they are placed.

The largest stone in this wall complex is 28 feet high (8.5 meters), and weighs in at 140 metric tons. The precision placement of the stones is so exact that a piece of paper cannot be slipped between them. It is probably this feature that has enabled this unique wall complex to stay standing for centuries in an area that is known for earthquakes and landslides.
3. To which country would I travel if I wished to visit Hadrian's Wall?

Answer: England

Hadrian's Wall was a defensive fortification built along the border of England and Scotland. It was started in AD 122 during the reign of Emperor Hadrian from whom it gets its name. The wall was originally 80 miles long, and its height and width varied with whatever was available geographically. Most of its construction was with earth and stone, and it averaged 16-20 ft in height.

Some parts of the remaining wall are endangered by those who take the stones to build other things.
4. To which country would I need to travel if I wanted to see the ancient walls of the city of Troy?

Answer: Turkey

I would need to travel to Turkey, a country full of historical relics. According to Homer's "Iliad", this is the location where the Trojan War took place. These stone walls are remarkably preserved despite being underground for centuries.
5. A world UNESCO site, the ancient Kano City Walls are located in the culturally rich country of Nigeria.

Answer: True

The Kano City Walls are ancient dirt walls that were built for defensive purposes in the 11th century. Construction continued off and on until the 16th century. These earthen walls had gates to control movement of the population going in and out. Much of this unusual wall and its gates are in ruins, but they are considered to be very important cultural, historical and spiritual icons.
6. The Flodden Wall, The Kings Wall, and The Telfer Wall are some of the walls that were built to protect which second largest city in Scotland?

Answer: Edinburgh

It was not uncommon during earlier centuries to build walls around a city. These walls are all part of Edinburgh's town walls, which were begun in the 12th century. The walls never proved to provide a lot of defense as they were breached numerous times by enemies. They did serve to prevent trade, and to seal off a city during times of plague.
7. Which Polish city is home to one of the most complete set of medieval fortifications and walls in all of Europe?

Answer: Paczkow

The beautiful city of Paczkow was spared bombing during WWII, and thus most of its original buildings are still standing. It is surrounded by two strong earthen walls that were later fortified using large stones. The Paczkow walls are almost completely intact unlike many other medieval walls.

The walls were begun in the 14th century and are approximately 1200 meters long. Around the walls was a moat which has since been turned into a public park for the many tourists who visit this architecturally significant town.
8. Often just called "The Wall", what is the name of the war memorial that is found in Washington D.C.?

Answer: Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall

The proper name for this memorial wall is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Constructed in 1982, these two walls were designed by Maya Lin who was of Chinese ancestry. The black stone for the memorial came from India. Stone cutting took place in Vermont and the actual carving of names was done in Memphis, Tennessee.

At their highest point they are about ten feet tall (three meters), and together they stretch 246 feet (75 meters) long. Many people from many places on the globe worked together to create this modern version of a memorial wall.
9. The John Lennon Wall can be found in Prague, which is the capital of which European country?

Answer: Czech Republic

To see this unique memorial wall you would have to travel to the Czech Republic. The John Lennon wall was a simple building wall that has been transformed by fans of the late singer/songwriter. It started in 1980 when a fan painted Lennon's portrait on this wall.

Ever since, other fans have offered their artistic work to the wall and thus it is ever-changing. The government tried to paint over the wall, but by morning the wall paintings in honor of Lennon and his idea of world peace were all over the wall.

It is the symbol of a generation of people who have occupied one of the most unstable governments in modern Europe. It is owned by the religious group "Knights of the Maltese Cross" which is centuries old. They allow, support and encourage the memorials on this wall.
