Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jigme Khesar became King of Bhutan in 2006 and was officially crowned in 2008. Due to his preferred hair style at the time, he acquired which of the following nicknames?

Answer: Asian Elvis

King Jigme Khesar studied abroad at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, Cushing Academy and Wheaton College in Massachusetts and loves the Boston Celtics. The King of Bhutan is the ultimate Elvis fan, sporting slicked back hair and long choppy sideburns and even played the The King of Rock and Roll's music at his wedding reception.
2. Bhutan is a "naan-shaped" country sandwiched between two large nations. China/Tibet is to the north. If you went due south, east, or west, where would you be?

Answer: India

Other countries in proximity to Bhutan to the west, south and east (respectively) are Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar (Burma). However, they are all separated from Bhutan by one or more Indian states.

Given this information, you might assume that life in a little landlocked country located between comparative "super powers" would be strife-ridden. But according to a poll conducted by "Business Week" magazine in 2006, Bhutan is the happiest (whatever that means) country in Asia and amongst the top ten most happy countries in the world.
3. Bhutan introduced something for the first time in 1999, what was it?

Answer: Television

June, 1999 saw the introduction of television. They went from nothing to over forty channels of cable TV. Immediately this quiet Buddhist nation, often compared to the mythical Shangri-La, was struggling with crime and drug abuse.
4. What is the name of the architecture that is unique to the Himalayan region of Tibet and Bhutan?

Answer: Dzong

The Dzong architecture is noted for its high outer walls that slope inwards with windows at higher levels, usually a watchtower, and inner flagstone courtyards. They are usually adorned with Buddhist symbols.
It is rare to find any examples of this architecture outside of the region, but the University of Texas at El Paso was built in this style. A notable example in Bhutan is the Trongsa Dzong which is the largest fortress in the country.
5. The total land area of Bhutan is 38,394 square kilometres (or 14,824 square miles). To put this in perspective, Bhutan compares to which of the following?

Answer: almost twice the size of Wales

All the incorrect places are MUCH bigger in size than Bhutan (Cuba, the smallest of the those mentioned, is almost three times larger). As of 2011, Bhutan was number 135 on the world list according to area.

In Europe, the "size of Wales" has become a quasi-"standard" of comparison. If you're from that side of "the Pond", you may or may not have had a slight advantage in answering this question.
6. The Paro Valley in Bhutan houses one of the holiest sites in the country, the Taktsang Monastery, which hangs off the side of a cliff. What does Taktsang mean in English? (Clue: an endangered, indigenous species)

Answer: Tiger's Nest

You can visit this beautiful monastery. It is a two to three hour trek from the river below or assistance can be provided with ponies. It was likely used as a template for the films "The Shadow" and "Batman Begins", for the Temple of the Cobras and the HQ of the League of Shadows respectively, except they were both CGI (Computer Generated Imagery).
7. Which spur of the Himalayan mountains can be found in Bhutan?

Answer: The Black Mountains

The Dolomite Mountains are located in Italy, and are part of the Alps. The Cascade Mountains can be found in the Pacific northwest portion of North America, stretching from British Columbia in Canada to California in the United States. They also pass through the states of Washington and Oregon.

The Andes Mountains can be found in South America traveling through seven countries in the western portion of the continent. Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park can be found in the Black Mountains.
8. Punakha, in the Punakha-Wangdue valley, once the capital of Bhutan and the seat of government, sits at the confluence of what two rivers. What are those two rivers whose names translate to "Male & Female" or "Mother & Father"?

Answer: Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu

The word "Chhu" means "river" or "water" in Dzongkha, the official national language in Bhutan. The other chhus or rivers listed are all rivers in Bhutan. They eventually drain to the Brahmaputra River in India.
9. What types of bodies of water in Bhutan are the Manas, Raidak, Torsa, and Sankosh?

Answer: Rivers

They are the main rivers in Bhutan. The Torsa begins within Tibet, the Raidak is part of the Brahmaputra river system and flows from Bhutan. The Mansa flows between Bhutan and India and the Sankosh starts in Bhutan and connects to the Brahmaputra river in India.
10. What is the name of the plains in the Himalayan Foothills region of Bhutan and are an extension of the Bengal-Assam plains?

Answer: The Duar Plains

The Duar plains are especially known for tea growing. The three wrong answers are all tall Himalayan peaks within Bhutan. One of the wrong answers, Gangkhar Puensum, is believed to be the highest peak in the world which remains unclimbed as of 2011, at 7,570 metres.

The reasons for this are twofold; there are no rescue facilities in the area, the nearest being in India and the Bhutanese government put a ban on climbing all peaks above 6,000 metres as the local people believe spirits live at the tops of the mountains. Climbing the mountains would be sacrilegious to the local community.

As the mountain has three peaks and straddles the border with China (Tibet), a team from Japan did ascend from the Chinese side and reached a subsidiary peak, but the main summit remains unclimbed.
