2. Which of these is the largest island in Lake Superior?

3. Is Lake Superior the largest freshwater lake in the world by volume and by surface area?

Answer: No

Lake Superior is the largest by surface area, but not by volume. It has a surface area of 31,700 square miles. The lake has about 3,000,000,000,000,000 gallons of water. Lake Baikal is the largest freshwater lake in the world by volume.
4. Lake Superior was named "le lac supérieur" by French explorers. What does this mean?

Answer: Highest Lake

Lake Superior was named "le lac supérieur" by the French in the seventeenth century. They called it that because it was higher than Lake Huron. In the Ojibwa language, Gitche Gumee is how the lake is known and means means "big water". It was also once known as Lac Tracy by the French.
5. What is the other Great Lake that Lake Superior is connected to?

Answer: Lake Huron

The St. Marys River connects the two lakes. Lake Huron is the second largest of the Great Lakes. It was named after the Huron people that lived there. Lake Huron has a surface area of 23,010 square miles.
6. Which of these is NOT true of Lake Superior?

Answer: It contains about 25 percent of all of the world's freshwater.

It really only contains about 10 percent of the world's freshwater. The deepest point in the lake is about 40 miles north of Munising, Michigan. The average underwater visibility of the lake is 27 feet, which makes it cleaner and clearer than the other lakes.
7. How was Lake Superior formed?

Answer: glaciers

About 10,000 years ago the Great Lakes were formed by retreating glaciers. This makes the lake only 10,000 years old, which is relatively young. During the MidContinent Rift glaciers formed about 1.2 billion years ago and gradually retreated to the point where the lakes formed.

8. What months are considered Lake Superior's stormy months?

Answer: October and November

The months considered the calmest are June and July. The highest recorded wave height on the lake is 31 feet. The lake has enough water to flood all of North and South America to a depth of one foot.
9. Lake Superior does not support life in the lake as well as the other Great Lakes.

Answer: True

The lake has less dissolved nutrients, which means it is ultra-oligotrophic. Its fishery produces only about 10 percent of what Lake Michigan does annually. The fishery has begun to improve, though. There are 89 species of fish in the lake, 31 of which are native and 21 of which are not native.
10. Does Lake Superior ever completely freeze over?

Answer: Yes

Yes, on occasion is does completely freeze over but usually only 40-90 per cent of the surface area. With the advent of global warming the depth and the time of the freeze are receding. According to a study by professors at the University of Minnesota there is a complete freeze about every 20 years.
