Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the largest of these four countries that end in "I"?

Answer: Burundi

The order, from largest to smallest, is: Burundi (27,834 sq km), Haiti (27,750 sq km), Djibouti (23,200 sq km), and Fiji (18,274 sq km).

Burundi is larger than Haiti by only 84 sq km. That's only about 1/3 as big as the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin (249 sq km).
2. These comparably large countries are all in Africa and are very close in size, but one is larger than the others. Which one?

Answer: Chad

The order, from largest to smallest, is: Chad (1,284,000 sq km), Niger (1,267,000 sq km), Angola (1,246,700 sq km), and Mali (1,240,192 sq km).

Interestingly, these four countries rank sequentially in order (21st, 22nd, 23rd and 24th) of all the countries in the world.
3. Each of these countries is so small you may have trouble finding them on a map. The largest one is which one?

Answer: Andorra

The order, from largest to smallest, is: Andorra (468 sq km), Barbados (430 sq km), Grenada (344 sq km), and Malta (316 sq km).

Their total combined area (1558 sq km) is only about 1/3 the size of the Great Salt Lake in Utah (4,662 sq km).
4. Which of these "M"ammoth countries is the largest?

Answer: Mexico

The order, from largest to smallest, is: Mexico (1,958,201 sq km), Mongolia (1,564,116 sq km), Mali (1,240,192 sq km), and Mauritania (1,025,520 sq km). Of these four countries, only Mexico is larger than the largest US state of Alaska (1,717,855 sq km).
5. One of these relatively small countries is larger than the other three, and all are in South America. Which one?

Answer: Ecuador

The order, from largest to smallest, is: Ecuador (283,561 sq km), Guyana (214,969 sq km), Uruguay (175,016 sq km), and Suriname (163,820 sq km). For lack of a better fun fact, only six of the fifteen South American countries do not have a "U" in their name. Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela all do. Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and the Falkland Islands do not.
6. It might be easier to tell which of these four countries is the largest than it is to spell them. Which is largest?

Answer: Uzbekistan

The order, from largest to smallest, is: Uzbekistan (447,400 sq km), Kyrgyzstan (199,900 sq km), Tajikistan (143,100 sq km), and Azerbaijan (86,600 sq km). All of these countries are landlocked, meaning they do not have direct access to the oceanways through non-manmade channels.

Of these four, Uzbekistan is doubly landlocked, meaning it is bordered ONLY by landlocked countries, and is one of only two currently double landlocked countries. The other is Lichtenstein.
7. Which is the largest of these four countries, each of which occupies the entire island on which it is wholly contained?

Answer: Cuba

The order, from largest to smallest, is: Cuba (110,861 sq km), Iceland (103,000 sq km), Sri Lanka (65,610 sq km), and Jamaica (10,991 sq km).

The largest country in the world that occupies an entire single island (not including Greenland, which is a territory of Denmark) is Madagascar (587,041 sq km), which is just more than twice the combined area of these other four island countries (290,462 sq km).
8. On a globe, the sizes of these very large countries appear distorted. Which is the largest of the four?

Answer: Brazil

The order, from largest to smallest, is: Brazil (8,514,877 sq km), Australia (7,741,220 sq km), India (3,287,263), and Sudan (2,505,813 sq km).

If you counted each country of the world's claims in Antarctica (Australia's is the largest, at 6,120,000 sq km), Australia would be ranked the 2nd largest country in the world at 13,861,220 sq km, behind Russia (17,098,242 sq km) and ahead of Canada (9,970,610 sq km), neither of which claim territory in Antarctica.
9. Each of these countries is also the "largest" of something, but one is the largest of these four.

Answer: Algeria

The order, from largest to smallest, is: Algeria (2,381,740 sq km), Saudi Arabia (2,149,690 sq km), Indonesia (1,904,569 sq km), and Ukraine (603,700 sq km).

Algeria is the largest country in Africa, Saudi Arabia is the largest country in the Middle East, Ukraine is the largest country in Europe, and Indonesia is the largest country situated only on islands.

The six largest countries in the world, one from each continent existing ONLY on the continent they are contained in, (excluding Antarctica) are China (9,598,086 sq km), Algeria (2,381,740 sq km), Ukraine (603,700 sq km), Brazil (8,514,877 sq km), Canada (9,970,610 sq km), and Australia (7,741,220 sq km).
The total land area of these six countries alone comprises just over 1/4 of the entire world's land coverage (148,939,063 sq km).
10. What is the largest of these four countries, all of which are peculiar for the same reason?

Answer: Djibouti

The order, from largest to smallest, is: Djibouti (23,200 sq km), Singapore (683 sq km), San Marino (61 sq km), and Monaco (2 sq km).

The name of the capital city of each of these countries is the same as the name of the country.

The capital of Djibouti is Djibouti, the capital of Singapore is Singapore, the capital of San Marino is San Marino, and the capital of Monaco is Monaco.
