Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Also known as Mount McKinley, North America's highest peak is more typically known by what name?

Answer: Denali

Although the mountain had been named after President William McKinley, Alaska recognized it by its original name, Denali, in the mid-1970s (and the U.S. would regard it officially in 2015). Denali, an Athabaskan word, isn't too complex-- it means 'tall'. Go figure.

It reaches an altitude of 20,310ft, higher than any other mountain on the continent. There's no road to Denali directly, but a highway does pass through Denali State Park, due north from Anchorage en route to Fairbanks.
2. It might be called Zealand, but it's actually the most populated island of what European nation?

Answer: Denmark

Zealand is the largest island in Denmark and the home to Copenhagen on the nation's eastern edge. The island sits directly in the middle of the strait connecting the North Sea to the Baltic Sea and is passed by nearly any ship operating in the area for shipping and tourism. Copenhagen also connects to Sweden, to the east, by the Øresund Bridge over the waters here. Zealand is, obviously, not New Zealand-- half a world away-- and the two don't share much besides the name itself.

This said, while New Zealand was named for the Dutch region of Zeeland, the Danish Zealand has a different origin.
3. Found at the end of the River Liffey and within a mountain range, what European destination is found on the eastern coast of an island?

Answer: Dublin

The capital of Ireland, Dublin, is the choice here since it sits on the mouth of the River Liffey on the island's eastern coast, facing out towards the Irish Sea. Settled more than a thousand years ago, Dublin is home to architecture both old and new; visitors can visit Dublin Castle (built in the early thirteenth century) and churches that are even older, or they can stop off for a Guinness at the city's storehouse, one of the most famous beer destinations in the world.
4. Known historically as Hellespont, what waterway runs along the Gallipoli Peninsula?

Answer: The Dardanelles

The more southerly of the Turkish Straits, the Dardanelles connects the Aegean (and the Mediterranean) to the Sea of Marmara, passing through Turkey before becoming the Bosphorus Strait (and leading to the Black Sea). Historians would know the region quite well since the Dardanelles are home to what was considered the ancient city of Troy and the shores of Gallipoli, a major site of battle during World War I.

The strait is only about sixty kilometers long, but is one of the most important for Turkey's military and economic pasts.
5. What river, flowing through Vienna (as shown), Bratislava, Budapest, and Belgrade, is the second-longest in Europe, second only to the Volga?

Answer: Danube

Although the Danube is Europe's second-longest river (stretching nearly three thousand kilometers through the continent), it holds a different unique achievement since it passes through more countries than any other river on the globe (it passes through ten of them).

The cities listed in the question are the capitals that it passes through, but it also hits Germany, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine. The Danube drains into the Black Sea on Romania's eastern coast.
6. Which of these, found in the Arctic Ocean in the north of Canada, is the largest uninhabited island in the world?

Answer: Devon Island

Found in Baffin Bay in the far north of Canada, Devon Island is probably the one spot in this quiz you're least likely to go because while it's a big island, it's not a very hospitable one. Found in the Queen Elizabeth Islands, Devon is part of Nunavut.

It's generally unvisited outside of the scientific community due to its temperature and harsh landscape, though it is notably one of the few locations on Earth that bears resemblance to the surface of Mars-- not in colour, but in general environment.
7. One of the world's oldest cities, what city, shown here, is found next to Mount Qasioun in the Middle East?

Answer: Damascus

The capital and largest city of the Middle Eastern nation of Syria, Damascus is one of the oldest cities on the planet having been first settled more than four thousand years ago. The ancient ruins found in Damascus are both some of the most fascinating and most at-risk considering the region's frequent struggles with military engagement and general lack of preservation.

Although the city has been home to numerous UNESCO Heritage Sites, it's also the location that had the most at risk or destroyed since the list's inception. Mount Qasioun is home to the city's highest point.
8. Ciudad Trujillo was a former name of the capital of what nation?

Answer: Dominican Republic

Known, temporarily, as Ciudad Trujillo and also known as Santo Domingo de Guzmán, the city of Santo Domingo is the capital of the Dominican Republic, the eastern country found on the island of Hispaniola (the western being Haiti). The Dominican Republic, one of the most livable Caribbean nations, receives tons of tourists every year to take advantage of the tropical weather.

This said, Santo Domingo is one of the oldest settled cities in the Americas having been selected as a Spanish settlement at the end of the fifteenth century.

It was later inhabited by the French, only gaining independence in 1849.
9. One of India's largest cities, which of these destinations is home to the Red Fort, the Lotus Temple, and Chandni Chowk?

Answer: Delhi

India's national capital, the city of Delhi is one of the largest not only in India, but on the planet. The greater area of Delhi contains more than 26,000,000 citizens. But it's not just a highly-populated region, it's also a city dotted with famous landmarks and unique sights.

The Red Fort was a royal palace for centuries while the Lotus Temple is one of the world's largest houses of Baháʼí worship. Chandni Chowk, meanwhile, is a famous marketplace, perhaps the most well-known in all of India.
10. Which of these locations is part of the Great Escarpment in South Africa?

Answer: The Drakensberg

Part of South Africa's Great Escarpment, the Drakensberg region cuts along the South African/Lesothan border and provides both countries with their highest peaks. Complete with sharp cliffs and lush valleys, the Drakensberg is known for its protected ecosystems, many of which are popular for hiking and adventuring.

The region was named by the Dutch, who explored it and named it 'The Dragon Mountains'. The Great Escarpment, meanwhile, stretches north to other bordering nations.
