Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This famous museum, renowned for its distinctive architecture, is found in which continent?

Answer: Europe

The Louvre (or as it is known in French, Le Musée du Louvre) is found in Paris, France. Apart from its architecture, it is also famous for housing some of the world's most famous works of art, including the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. Europe consists of 48 countries, totalling a size of just over 10 million square km (3 million square miles).
2. This famous statue is found in a city-state on which continent?

Answer: Asia

The statue is known as Merlion, and is a world-famous symbol of Singapore. The statue (weighing over 70 tonnes) consists of a lion's head with a fish's body, reflecting the city's origins as a fishing village. Asia is a large continent (over 44 million square km; or 17 million square miles).

It also boasts a diversity of languages, with over 1,400 estimated languages spoken in South Asia alone.
3. Penguins can be found on multiple continents, but where are the vast majority of Emperor Penguins found?

Answer: Antarctica

Emperor Penguins are the largest of all penguins, reaching heights of over four feet. While penguins are synonymous with Antarctica, interestingly there are more birds of other species found on the vast, cold continent. This includes albatrosses, cormorants, gulls, and even ducks. Antarctica is the not only the coldest continent on earth, but also the driest and windiest.
4. Every continent on earth contains at least one desert.

Answer: True

While large deserts are obvious geographical features of Australia, Africa, North America and Asia, the other continents are not as well-known for them. However, South America contains multiple deserts (including the Patagonian Desert, the largest in the Americas); Europe has several small deserts (for example, Błędowska Desert in Poland); and Antarctica is technically classified as a desert as a whole.
5. Eucalyptus trees like the one pictured are native to only a small number of continents. Which continent contains the vast majority of native species?

Answer: Australia

There are over 700 species of Eucalyptus trees, most of which are native to Australia. A small number can be found in geographically near countries in Asia (Indonesia and Papua New Guinea). Australia is about 20 per cent desert, and around 70 per cent of its population live within an hour's drive of its coast.
6. This iconic beach is in Ipanema. Which continent is it on?

Answer: South America

Ipanema can be found in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Despite its lovely backdrop, the name actually literally translates as "stinky lake". South America is one of the smaller of the world's continents, but can lay claims to the world's highest waterfall (Angel Falls); the largest river by volume (the Amazon); and the longest mountain range (the Andes).
7. Istanbul is the only city in the world that lies in two continents.

Answer: False

Istanbul is the largest and best known cross-continental city, straddling both Europe and Asia. However, there are others, including Atyrau in Kazakhstan and Orenburg, Russia (both also Europe-Asia). There is some debate about the specific borders of Asia and Europe meaning not all sources agree with this; both most geography experts do recognise at least Orenburg along with Istanbul.
8. Which continent(s) do the Rocky Mountains pass through?

Answer: North America

The Rocky Mountains, while very large (about 3,000 miles or 4,800 km), are found only in North America. They stretch from British Columbia, Canada, to New Mexico, USA. While most people consider North America to consist of USA, Canada and Mexico, officially the continent also includes Central American countries, meaning that the continent actually totals 41 countries.
9. Which continent is home to thousands of wildebeest, well-known for their annual mass migrations?

Answer: Africa

The wildebeest depicted here are from Masai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya, but they can also be found throughout Tanzania and Zambia. Migration patterns of this large animal can vary by up to several months each year, depending on weather patterns. There are two major species of wildebeest: the blue (which is larger and tends to have less curved horns) and the black.
10. The North Pole is considered to be part of the European continent.

Answer: False

The North Pole does not officially sit on any continent. Unlike the South Pole (which is part of Antarctica), the North Pole sits under a sheet of shifting ice, and not on land. This picture shows the aurora borealis (northern lights) around the North Pole, as viewed from Alaska.
