Bloody events did take place here (e.g. the murder by the Moscovites of the 'false Dimitris' in 1606 and 1612), but the true origin of the English name Red Square is the ambiguity of the word krasnij that may mean either beautiful or red.When the square was laid out it was considered to be the most 'beautiful' square of Moscow, rather than a 'red' square.

When the Red Army started parading here, there developed another connotation, especially in the West.
