Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You are moving in to Boston for the new college semester in a rented 24' truck. In trying to figure out how to navigate to your destination, which of the following roadways must you avoid despite the advice of the map?

Answer: Storrow Drive

Storrow Drive is a main roadway in Boston from which trucks and commercial vehicles are excluded. Due to several low arched bridges crossing the roadway, the Esplanade, and the Charles River into Cambridge, even relatively small trucks will become lodged under the spans.
2. After driving lost in downtown Boston for over an hour, you decide to take a break for lunch and a cold one at that famous bar where they made the show "Cheers". What bar are you looking for?

Answer: Cheers Beacon Hill

While there is a chain of bars known as Cheers - after the hit TV show, the original watering hole was the Bull and Finch Tavern on Beacon St. where you can, in fact, be seated in the back room. The name later changed to Cheers Beacon Hill. Triple-O's is in South Boston, and the Parker House is the HQ for politicians.
3. After moving your things into your new apartment on Commonwealth Ave, you decide to explore the city. While walking through Copley Square, you notice that the beacon on top of the old Hancock building changes from flashing blue to steady red. What should you do?

Answer: Step into a store for an umbrella

The lights at the top of the old Hancock building have displayed steady and/or flashing red or blue lights to predict the weather since 1950. The key to deciphering the weather is as follows: "Steady blue, clear view. Flashing blue, clouds due. Steady red, rain ahead. Flashing red, snow instead." During baseball season, the beacon will flash red if the Sox game has been called for rain.

The Massachusetts Lottery Commission draws winning Megabucks numbers on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Although Dunkin Donuts originated in nearby Braintree, it is Krispy Kreme Donuts that are sold hot from the oven when the red light is on in the window.
4. You decide to take a ride on the oldest subway in North America. Noticing a round sign with the letter 'T' on it, you duck into the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and are asked to present your 'Charlie Card'. Why are transit tickets named for "Charlie" in Boston?

Answer: he is doomed to ride forever for lack of an exit fare

'Charlie on the MTA' was recorded in 1959 by the Kingston Trio. The ballad told of Charlie who boarded a subway car but couldn't get off because he didn't bring enough money for the "exit fare" that had been established to upgrade the service. Charles Sumner was an antebellum U.S. Senator from Massachusetts who suffered a humiliating caning on the floor of the Capitol. Charles Reed was a Civil War bugler from Boston. August Belmont was the builder of Boston's subway system.

He had no grandson name Charles.
5. Your train stops at Kenmore Square, so you get out and immediately spot the huge landmark electric sign that illuminates the square. What does it say?

Answer: Citgo

The landmark sign, featuring the Cities Service logo, was built in 1940. It was originally made from over 5 miles of glass tubes. The refurbished sign has thousands of light-emitting diodes.
6. Strolling across the bridge from Kenmore Square over the Massachusetts Turnpike, the air is rent with cheers and a loud rendition of The Standells 1960s hit "Dirty Water". The Red Sox are celebrating another victory. What is "Dirty Water" about?

Answer: sneaking into the BU girls' dorms after midnight

Here are lyrics from the first verse- "Frustrated women have to be in by twelve o'clock, but I'm wishin' and a-hopin, that just once those doors weren't locked."
7. Walking back to the Kenmore Square 'T' stop, you are nearly run over by a brightly colored amphibious assault vehicle crammed with people. What are they doing?

Answer: taking a "Duck Boat" tour

Boston's Duck Tours take tourists through the historic downtown area and then around the Charles River Basin. Riders are expected to "quack" at passers by and traffic as they tour.
8. Back in the apartment, your new house mates invite you to go on a "packie run". Where are your newfound friends taking you?

Answer: to buy liquor

In Massachusetts, liquor stores are called Package Stores. Ever since the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, it is illegal to carry alcoholic containers in public view.
9. As you return your rental truck to Dorchester, you pass the Boston Gas tank on the Southeast Expressway, you notice the original design by Corita painted on it. According to legend, what former world leader is concealed in the artwork?

Answer: Ho Chi Minh

Sister Corita Kent painted the tank in the early 1970s, during the Vietnam War. Many people noticed what appeared to be the image of Communist leader Ho Chi Minh in the modern design. Local officials were outraged, but the art remains unchanged to this day.
10. Hailing a cab outside the truck rental, you tell the driver to take you back to your apartment in the Back Bay. He flips on the meter and asks you, 'Which tunnel do you take?' What should you answer?

Answer: "Please don't take a tunnel!"

The trip should take you nowhere near Boston's tunnels, part of Boston's infamous 'Big Dig'. The Big Dig was the most expensive public works project in United States history, running 700% over budget ($14 billion) and resulting in at least one death from a collapsed tunnel in 2007. Named for Red Sox great Ted Williams, 'the Ted', will funnel you right into Logan Airport. 'The Tip' is named for former House Speaker Thomas P. 'Tip' O'Neil, and is the depressed 3.5 mile central artery that now runs beneath the city from South Station to North Station.

The Leonard Zakim Bridge is not a tunnel at all, but the connector to I93 north of Boston.
