Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Devon is situated in the south-west of England. Which of the following towns can you NOT visit in this county?

Answer: Redruth

Redruth is in Cornwall, which is to the west of Devon. Somerset and Dorset border Devon to the east. Honiton is best known for lace-making; in fact, Queen Victoria's wedding dress was made from Honiton lace. Barnstaple was well known for the wool trade in the Middle Ages. Lastly, Torquay forms part of the English Riviera with Paignton and Brixham.
2. If you want to take the train to the top of Mount Snowdon, which of the following towns will you visit?

Answer: Llanberis

All of these towns are in North Wales, but Llanberis is the only one at the foot of Snowdon. Betws-y-Coed is where you can find the Swallow Falls, among other attractions. Llanrwst is in the Conwy valley and you can visit the Gwydir Chapel containing the stone coffin of Llywelyn the Great. Capel Curig has the remains of a Roman fort and the National Mountain Centre among its attractions.
3. Which town in the West Midlands was acknowledged for over 200 years to be the centre of England?

Answer: Meriden

Meriden was long thought to be the centre of England, being the place furthest from the sea in any direction. There is a cross in the town marking the spot, which states it has been there for over 500 years, but this is debatable. Ordnance Survey research placed the centre in Fenny Drayton, Leicestershire, in 2002 and in Derbyshire in 2003. All the other choices are in the Midlands, near the city of Birmingham.
4. Gretna Green, in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, is best known for which of these?

Answer: Weddings

Gretna Green is only just over the border from England. Historically, couples in England could not marry under the age of twenty-one unless they had parental consent, so many eloped to Scotland where these laws did not apply. Gretna Green established itself as an industry, with couples being married by the local blacksmith.

The age of consent later became eighteen, but Gretna has retained its status as a romantic place to marry.
5. All of these are natural rock formations. Three are in southern England. Which one is the odd one out?

Answer: Giant's Causeway

The Giant's Causeway is in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, and is a series of basalt rock columns formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago. The Needles are chalk stacks off the coast of the Isle of Wight. Old Harry Rocks are also chalk stacks near Swanage, Dorset. Durdle Door is a limestone arch near Lulworth, also in Dorset.
6. The towns of Harrogate, Buxton, Malvern and Epsom have what in common?

Answer: They are all spa towns

Only Epsom has a racecourse and only Malvern is in Worcestershire. None of them are on the Thames, but all of them are known for their natural waters. Epsom's water was originally used in the production of Epsom salts. Harrogate's natural water contains iron, salt and sulphur and tastes strongly of the latter. Both Buxton and Malvern are pure spring waters, with no minerals, and are bottled and sold commercially.
7. Which of these Welsh resorts is the only one on the south coast?

Answer: Barry Island

Barry Island became a peninsula in the late 19th century, having been joined to the mainland as part of the expansion of the railway works and docks. It is within easy reach of Cardiff, and is popular for day trips. It is probably best known as the setting for the television series 'Gavin and Stacey'. Barmouth is in north-west Wales, Beaumaris is on Anglesey in north Wales and Rhyl is on the north coast, quite close to the border with England.
8. Which seaside resort was the first in England to have an officially designated nudist beach?

Answer: Brighton

After some opposition, the beach at Black Rock, Brighton was opened in 1980. Brighton has pebbles and shingles, so it is probably not that comfortable. Many more official naturist beaches became established afterward, particularly in the Hampshire/Dorset area where the weather is a little warmer.
9. The island of Lindisfarne is also known by which of these names?

Answer: Holy Island

Lindisfarne is the site of one of the earliest monasteries in the UK, founded in the 7th century by St. Aidan. It is situated off the coast of Northumberland. Brownsea Island is in Pool Harbour, Dorset, and has connections with the Boy Scout movement as the first camp was held there in 1907. Lundy Island is in the Bristol Channel and Ramsey Island is off the coast of Pembrokeshire, west Wales. Both of these are nature reserves, mainly for birds.
10. The Caledonian Canal runs from Inverness in the east of Scotland to which town on the west of the country?

Answer: Fort William

The canal follows the line of the Great Glen fault, which runs from northeast to southwest. The canal includes four lochs, Douchfour, Ness, Oich and Lochy with the remainder being man-made. The canal was designed by Thomas Telford and was completed in 1822. It is used mostly for tourism.
