Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Myanmar is widely (and perhaps better) known by its previous name. What is that?

Answer: Burma

Indo-China is a vague term for the region between South China and India, and was used rather more specifically of French Indo-China, which consisted of Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos. Siam is the former name of Thailand.
2. What is the capital?

Answer: Naypyidaw

In 2005 the capital was moved from Yangon (Rangoon) to Nay Pyi Taw. Mandalay is the country's second largest city after Yangon. Bangkok (now called Krung Thep) is the capital of Thailand, and Mysore is in central southern India.
3. Which of the following countries does Myanmar NOT share a border with?

Answer: Cambodia

Myanmar borders on India, Bangladesh, China, Laos and Thailand.
4. Part of the Myanmar coastline is on the Andaman Sea. On which body of water is the rest of the coast?

Answer: Bay of Bengal

The Bay of Bengal separates India and Bangladesh from Myanmar. The other three bodies of water are all well to the east of the Malay Peninsula.
5. What was the approximate population, as estimated in 2009?

Answer: 60 million

Wikipedia gives a figure of just under 60.3 for 2010.
6. What is the approximate area of the country?

Answer: 261,800 sq miles

So, the country is rather bigger than Texas and significantly bigger than France.
7. As it approaches the sea, the country's main river, the Irrawaddy forms a delta.

Answer: True

It is one of the great Asian deltas, but less well known than, for example, the Ganges or Mekong Delta.
8. Which of the following best described the political order in Myanmar from 1962 to c.2011?

Answer: Military dictatorship

In 1990 the military regime allowed multi-party elections and promptly placed the winner, Aung San Suu Kyi, under house arrest and prevented the democratically elected assembly from meeting. Campaigners for democracy were harassed, jailed and ill-treated. It was a telling indication of oppressiveness of the regime that only government departments, the armed forces, major businesses and large tourist offices were allowed access to the internet. There was only one ISP - and it was owned by the government. Private households, small business and even schools and colleges were not allowed to be networked.

More or less free elections were held in 2010, but the influence of the military remains enormous.
9. Which European country ruled Myanmar immediately prior to independence in 1948?

Answer: Britain

Britain fought three Burmese wars in the nineteenth century - in 1824-26, 1852-53 and 1885. Each of these was followed by the annexation of Burmese territory, and from 1885 onwards the country was administered as part of British India. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Portugal and the Netherlands had trading stations on the coast.
10. Myanmar is one of the Asian 'tiger' economies.

Answer: False

The economy is poorly developed and heavily dependent on the production of opium poppies. Many of the inhabitants live in poverty. The gross domestic product divided by the population adjusted for purchasing power was about $1,324 per year in 2010. (Source: Wikipedia article on Myanmar).

The country missed out on the more general rise in living standards in the region in the last 30-40 years of the twentieth century.
