Answer: Bonn

Bonn was capital 1949-90.

Answer: Florence

Florence was capital of Italy 1865-70. Turin was the first capital of united Italy, but just for some months in 1865.

4. Moscow wasn't always the capital of Russia. What was the name of the city that was the capital before Moscow became capital?

Answer: Petrograd

Capital was moved from St. Petersburg to Moscow 1922. At the time (1914-24) the official name of the city was Petrograd. It was called Leningrad 1924-91. Hence both St. Petersburg and Leningrad would be wrong answers, as I ask for the name of the ex-capital at the time of the change. Novgorod by the way was capital of Russia in medieval times.
5. Astana (Akmola), Kazakhstan is the capital, but what was the capital city called immediately prior to Astana's elevation to capital?

Answer: Almaty

This is tricky, too. Former capital was Almaty, called so from 1994. It was called Alma-Ata 1921-94 and Vernyi 1854-1921. Hence the latest name of the city would be right answer, the others wrong, even if it is the same city.

In 1940-46 Douala was capital of French Cameroon.

During Spanish colonial rule it was called Santa Isabel (up to 1973, colonial rule ended 1968). In June 2000 it was announced that the administrative capital was to be temporarily moved from Malabo to Bata. Still, Malabo will remain the constitutionally recognized capital.
