Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Many people, myself included, always believed that Plymouth, Massachusetts was the site of the first Thanksgiving celebration in the US. Come to find out that it's not. What border town was the site?

Answer: San Elizario, Texas

Yes, it was in the border town of San Elizario, Texas in 1598 that a Thanksgiving feast was hosted by the conquistador Don Juan de Onate. San Elizario is also home to the first Main Street in America. It has become a small artist colony with friendly people who love to share their town's heritage.

Some historians believe that thanksgiving may have been celebrated even earlier in Saint Augustine, Florida, but the evidence is unclear.
2. Want to have a unique wedding? Try out this tiny chapel that has come to be known as the "Smallest Church in America". Where along I-95 would you find this southern landmark?

Answer: South Newport, Georgia

This dream of grocer Agnes Harper came true in 1949. The church, equipped with stained glass windows imported from England, has been the backdrop for stunning wedding photos. It has hosted non-denominational services the third Sunday of every month. Only 15 feet long and 10 feet wide, the church can accommodate twelve parishioners and a pastor.
3. Bronner's advertises itself as the world's largest Christmas store. To which town between the Great Lakes would you have to travel to shop there?

Answer: Frankenmuth, Michigan

Bronner's is not only a store, but an entire Christmas experience. You can enjoy a series of outdoor displays along the winding drive. There's also a replica of the original "Silent Night" chapel. The town of Frankenmuth is a quaint German town where you can enjoy a riverboat ride, shopping, and some fine German dining.
4. The East Race Waterway is the first artificial white water course in North America. It runs right through the center of what college town?

Answer: South Bend, Indiana

Built in 1984, the East Race is a loop off the Saint Joseph River. It is 1900 feet long with a drop of approximately twelve feet, which can vary according to the height of the river. The US Olympic kayak team has held tryouts there several times, but it is open to the public most of the summer.
5. The earliest known action photo was a picture of a young man jumping across Stand Rock. Stand Rock is located in what modern day Midwestern tourist location?

Answer: Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

H. H. Bennett invented a new type of shutter and film that allowed photographing instant action. Formerly, photos would require several minutes for the picture to take, and any movement would make the subject blurry. In 1886, Bennett published a picture of his son Ashley in mid-jump to show off his innovative technology. According to legend, the shot took several tries to get right and Ashley was worn out from all his jumping.
6. Where in the Great Plains would your search for the world's largest hand-dug well eventually lead you?

Answer: Greensburg, Kansas

The Big Well, as it's called, was Greensburg's water source from 1888 to 1932. At 32 feet across and 109 feet deep, it truly is "a marvel of pioneer engineering" (as its official website calls it). There's a museum where visitors can descend a spiral staircase deep into the well itself.
7. Collectors and the faithful can appreciate the artistry of the Precious Moments Chapel. What town along historic Route 66 is it near?

Answer: Carthage, Missouri

Samuel J. Butcher, the original artist behind the famous Precious Moments figurines, created the chapel as a monument to his thankfulness for all God had given him. Nestled in the Ozark Mountains, the grounds feature manicured flower gardens, statues and fountains. The chapel itself has 30 stained glass windows and 84 hand painted murals.
8. Beloved children's author Dr. Seuss has a sculpture garden memorial in his New England hometown. Of all the places you could go, which one would take you to that garden?

Answer: Springfield, Massachusetts

Theodore Seuss Geisel's first children's book "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street" was rejected by 27 publishers. Discouraged, Seuss considered giving up writing when he ran into an old friend. His friend told Seuss that he published children's books.

The rest, as they say, is history. The good doctor passed away in 1991, and his memorial garden opened in 2002 outside the Springfield Library in Massachusetts.
9. McDonald's and Wendy's need to step aside. Louis' Lunch along the US East Coast claims to be the first restaurant to serve the hamburger. Where is this masterstroke of culinary excellence to be found?

Answer: New Haven, Connecticut

Keep your pheasant under glass. Give me a good burger any day. The menu is simple, the service is friendly, and the food excellent. This might be a perfect restaurant. Don't ask for ketchup. New Haven was incorporated in 1784.
10. The old familiar hymn "The Old Rugged Cross" was first introduced at the Methodist Episcopal church in which tiny Midwest town?

Answer: Pokagon, Michigan

Rev. George Bennard, a traveling Evangelist, unveiled the song at a revival meeting in 1913. The church was first built as a hops barn in 1862. It wasn't converted into a church until 1876. The church was later restored to its 1913 condition.
