Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the largest peninsula in Europe in terms of area?

Answer: Scandinavian Peninsula

With a length of 1,850 kilometers and width varying from 370 to 805 km., the Scandinavian Peninsula is the largest in Europe. The name is said to derive from the term Scandinavia, which refers to the cultural region of Norway, Sweden and Denmark. However, modern-day Denmark actually is a part of a separate peninsula, named Jutland. Today, the Scandinavian Peninsula covers Norway, Sweden and north Finland.
2. How many countries lie entirely on the Balkan Peninsula (including Kosovo)? Note: To answer the question correctly, consider only the countries' mainland territories, as islands are not included in this separation.

Answer: 7

The seven countries are Greece, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo. Croatia and Serbia are mostly located on the Peninsula too, but they also have territories outside the Balkans. Countries that are located mostly outside the Balkans, but are only partially situated on it, include Turkey, Italy, Romania and Slovenia.
3. With a length of 897 kilometers, the Douro River is the third longest river on which peninsula?

Answer: Iberian

The Douro is the third longest river on the Iberian Peninsula after Tagus and Ebro. The river runs through both Portugal and Spain. Its source is located in the northern-central part of Spain (in the Soria Province, to be more specific), and through its mouth the river flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
4. For about six decades between the end of the 5th century and the middle of the 6th, what peninsula was a part of the Ostrogothic Kingdom?

Answer: Italian

During the rule of Theoderic, the kingdom reached its zenith, occupying large territories from modern France to modern Serbia. The Ostrogothic Kingdom was established in Italy in 493 AD and included a lot of Italy's neighbouring areas. Its capital was situated in Ravenna.
5. Which of the following Balkan states was never part of Yugoslavia?

Answer: Bulgaria

The successor states of Yugoslavia are Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro and Slovenia. Bulgaria never entered the Yugoslav Union.
6. Each of the following peaks is the highest point on its peninsula, but which of these peaks is the highest of the four mentioned below?

It is also the highest point of the Italian Peninsula, as Mont Blanc, located on the French-Italian border, is not considered part of the peninsula. With an elevation of 2,925 m., Musala is the highest point of the Rila Mountain and also the highest point of the Balkans. With an elevation of approximately 3,478 m., Mulhacen is the highest peak of the Sierra Nevada range and the highest point of the Iberian Peninsula too.
7. Jutland is a European peninsula. Most of its area belongs to Denmark, but parts of Germany are also located on it. Which German city is situated on the Jutland Peninsula?

8. Which of the following cities is located on two peninsulas and two continents?

Answer: Istanbul, Turkey

Asia Minor.
9. Which of the following French cities is NOT part of the Bretagne Peninsula?

Answer: Troyes

Troyes is a city in north-central France. It is also the capital of the Aube department. Nantes, Rennes and Brest are all situated on the Bretagne Peninsula, which occupies part of north-west France.
10. This flag is a rectangular bicolour with a field divided unevenly into green on the hoist, and red on the fly. The national flag of which country, located on the Iberian Peninsula, have I just described?

Answer: Portugal

The country's war ensign differs from the national flag, described above, in terms of correlation between the two colours. The correlation between green and red on the national flag is 2:3. On the other hand, the ratio between them on the war flag is 1:1.
