Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Considered one of the inspirations for the setting of the 2009 film "Avatar", Huangshan is a mountain range in what Chinese province?

Answer: Anhui

The Huangshan Range is found in Eastern China in the province of Anhui. Known for its unique limestone cliffs and various herbal teas, Huangshan is rich in cultural history; many Chinese artworks and stories lead back to the interesting landscapes found there.

A major natural tourist site in China, Huanghan became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990. The capital city of the province, Hefei, is found north of the mountains there; it's home to more people than the country of Denmark.
2. The Leshan Giant Buddha, built more than one thousand years ago, is found in Leshan, part of what Chinese province?

Answer: Sichuan

Sichuan, found in China's southwest region, is home to over eighty million people and has a history dating back several millennia. Its capital, Chengdu, is one of the most populated in the west half of the country. The Leshan Giant Buddha is interesting in and of itself. Found about one hundred kilometers from Chengdu, this the tallest statue made before the tenth century (AD). Reaching 71m in height, the Giant Buddha is taller than both the Statue of Liberty and Christ the Redeemer.

The Spring Temple Buddha in Henan became the tallest in the world in 2002, topping off 40m taller than Leshan's Buddha (and it was surpassed six years later by a Malaysian Buddha statue).
3. The irrigated, terraced rice fields of Yuanyang can be found outside of Kunming, part of which of these Chinese provinces?

Answer: Yunnan

Often made with vibrant colours (especially in Lexiaguo, where the fertile, iron-rich soils make the landscape different shades of red), the irrigated hills of rice paddies in Yuanyang and the area surrounding Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province, are a sight to behold.

The Honghe Hani Rice Paddies became such an integral part to the region's identity and region that the area became protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013. The province of Yunnan borders three other Southeast Asian countries-- Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar.
4. In what Chinese province does the Great Wall meet the ocean at Shanhai Pass?

Answer: Hebei

The Great Wall arrives at the Bohai Sea after over twenty-one thousand kilometers of snaking construction through China, separating the Northern reaches and Mongolia from the south. Considered one of the major passes for the wall, Shanhaiguan juts out into the sea.

It was the site of battle during the end of the Ming Dynasty when armies marched into nearby Beijing. It has since become a major tourist destination and cultural landmark. The province of Hebei is on the eastern coast of China. It contains Beijing as an enclave (Beijing being its own separate municipality) as well as Tianjin, another metropolis.

Its capital is Shijiazhuang.
5. Reaching a kilometer and a half into the sky, Tianmen Mountain is not part of the Himalayas. Instead, you can visit which Chinese province to ascend its steep cable cars?

Answer: Hunan

Part of the aptly-named Tianmen Mountain National Park, the mountain is 1,518m tall and features one of the longest, steepest cable cars in the world, allowing visitors to ascend its sides in a precarious climb instead of taking the winding roads eleven kilometers up to the top.
Hunan province, in the south of China, is full of natural wonders including Xiaoxiang, known for its system of rivers, lakes, and wilderness. Nearby Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and another location James Cameron used to inspire "Avatar" with its amazing sandstone peaks.
6. Found in this province, Jiayuguan City is home to Jiayu Pass, one of the largest and most westerly of the Great Wall. What is the province's name?

Answer: Gansu

A narrow province snaking up into the northwest of China, Gansu is also one of the highest above sea level, reaching a kilometer above the far-away ocean and sitting between two plateaus on the edge of the Gobi Desert. Home to part of the Silk Road, it makes sense that Gansu and its capital, Lanzhou, were also major historical trading hubs. Jiayu Pass was important in this regard, being one of the largest and most important passes on the far west of the Great Wall.

While more of a tourist spot today, Jiayu Pass is also home to a large fort in the middle of a more arid climate than the majority of the rest of the wall.
7. Considered a 'ghost city' for many years, Ordos City can be found in which of these large autonomous regions?

Answer: Inner Mongolia

Along with portions of Zhengdong and the New South China Mall of Dongguan, there's something unnerving about the idea of Ordos, a city in the northern Inner Mongolia province of China, because it looked to hold so much more. Considered a 'ghost city' when it was built, it was intended to hold millions more than it did, and with a unique real estate bubble during its development, it never really did; the Kangbashi region of the city held less than a twentieth of its expected citizens. The city is southwest of Hohhot, the capital of Inner Mongolia. Both are still a good distance away from the province's Mongolian border to the north, from which the region takes its name.
8. In which autonomous region of China could you visit the often-illuminated Reed Flute Cave?

Answer: Guangxi

Reed Flute Cave, found in Guilin, China, is hundreds of millions of years old and contains breathtaking limestone caverns. Since the site has become a tourist attraction, the city has installed coloured lights in the cave to create amazing light shows, giving the natural wonder a whole new dimension. Interestingly, the cave was considered a tourist site for more than a thousand years; inscriptions inside point to it being used for such purposes for many dynasties.
Reed Flute Cave and the city of Guilin are both a part of Guangxi, an autonomous region bordering Vietnam in South China.
9. You'd need to dispose of a fear of heights if you wanted to take a ride through Guoliang Tunnel in what Chinese province?

Answer: Henan

Found in Central China's Henan province, Guoliang Tunnel is carved into the mountainsides of the Taihang chain stretching through the countryside. Built to grant access to a small village cut off from the area by mountains, the tunnel was chiseled out by workers over five years in the 1970s.

Despite its apparent precariousness, the road is considered much safer than other frightening roads (like Yungas Road in Bolivia) because it's built into the mountainside proper rather than simply dropping off the cliffside entirely.
10. You can, seemingly, visit Paris, the Great Pyramids, Niagara Falls, and the Taj Mahal at Window of the World, a theme park in Shenzhen, one of the largest cities in which province?

Answer: Guangdong

While Shenzhen is one of the largest cities in China, it's Guangzhou that acts as the capital of Guangdong province (and it is larger!). Nonetheless, Shenzhen's Window of the World theme park should be indicative of the unique approach the city has to culture. Within the borders of this park, one can visit scale replicas of over ten dozen world landmarks (including a version of the Eiffel Tower at one third the height). Guangdong is, otherwise, one of the most densely populated in the country as home to over a hundred million people at any given time.

It's in the far southeast of the country.
