Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. New Zealand consists of a number of islands, by far the biggest of them being North Island and South Island. Which body of water, named after a famous explorer, separates them?

Answer: Cook Strait

Cook Strait is named after Captain James Cook of the British Royal Navy, who mapped the coastline of New Zealand in 1769/70. Just 14 miles wide at its narrowest point, the strait is crossed by ferries running between Wellington, on the North Island, and Picton on the South Island.
2. Auckland was by far the biggest city in New Zealand in the first decades of the 21st century. Which one of the following is a nickname of that city?

Answer: City of Sails

The Greater Auckland area had a population of well over 1.5 million in 2016, including the largest Polynesian community of any city in the world. The "City of Sails" moniker refers to the tens of thousands of yachts which can be seen in the city's two large natural harbours.
3. The Marlborough Region, at the northeast tip of South Island, is famous for which industry?

Answer: Winemaking

Winemaking in Marlborough began fairly recently, in the 1970s. Sauvignon blanc grapes are grown there, and the wine made from them is renowned worldwide. Pinot noir and Chardonnay are also produced in the region.
4. The city of Dunedin is named after which city in Scotland?

Answer: Edinburgh

Dunedin was founded in 1848 by members of the Free Church of Scotland. The city's name is derived from Dun Eideann, the Gaelic name for Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland. The city's population grew rapidly in the 1860s when gold was discovered nearby.
5. Famous for its whitewater kayaking, what is the name of the longest navigable river in New Zealand?

The other rivers are all in Australia. The Waikato River flows for 264 miles from Mount Ruapehu to the Tasman Sea, southeast of Auckland. There are a number of dams and hydro-electric power stations along its length.
6. In which city could you find a sports stadium that is known locally as the "Cake Tin"?

Answer: Wellington

Wellington Regional Stadium (known as Westpac Stadium in 2016 due to naming rights) is nicknamed the "Cake Tin" due to its round metallic structure. Opened in 2000, it is a multi-use stadium, with its most regular events being rugby union, one-day cricket, rugby league, soccer and music concerts.
7. Which mountain range runs along much of the western length of South Island?

Answer: Southern Alps

The Southern Alps extend for around 500 km down the west side of South Island. They include New Zealand's highest mountain, Mount Cook (Aoraki in the local Maori language), which tops out at 12,316 feet.
8. Christchurch, the biggest city on South Island in 2016, is located in which region of New Zealand?

Answer: Canterbury

Nicknamed the "Garden City", Christchurch was first settled in 1848. The venue of the 1974 Commonwealth Games, the city was rocked by a number of earthquakes in the early 21st century. The region of Canterbury covers much of the eastern half of South Island, and is mainly agricultural.
9. If you visit the city of Rotorua in the Bay of Plenty Region, which of these attractions would you expect to see nearby?

Answer: Geysers

The area around Rotorua is known for its geothermal activity, with numerous geysers and hot mud pools. The city is nicknamed "Sulphur City" due to the rotten eggs smell which prevails in the area.

Answer: Oban

Stewart Island was settled by Scotsmen, with its main settlement being named after the Scottish west coast resort of Oban. The town stands on Halfmoon Bay, a name which is sometimes substituted for Oban itself.
