Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which train line serves both Wrigley Field, the north side home of the Cubs, and US Cellular Park, the south side home of the White Sox?

Answer: Red

The Red line, formerly known as the State Street subway, runs from the northern edge of Chicago, about 7400 N, down to about 9500 S. Exit at Addison to catch the Cubs or at 35th for a Sox game. Incidentally, the name US Cellular Field is a new one in Chicago. Until this year, Sox park was named Comiskey Park, after Charles Comiskey, former owner of the team.
2. Which of the following trains does NOT travel around the "Loop" - the circle of elevated train tracks in downtown Chicago?

Answer: Blue

The Blue line's O'Hare branch runs on some elevated tracks on the northwest side, and its 54th street branch runs on el tracks on the west side. However, the Blue line is a subway through the downtown area. The Brown, Green, and Orange lines all circle the Loop, which runs over Lake, Wabash, Van Buren, and Wells streets.
3. Which of the following is NOT a sensible exit if you are going to take the train to visit the Art Institute of Chicago on Michigan Avenue?

Answer: Clark and Lake, from the Brown

Unless there were some specific stops you wanted to make downtown before you got to the museum, you wouldn't want to exit at Clark and Lake. Riding the Brown line, you should have gotten off 3 or 4 stops earlier, at Madison and Wabash or Adams and Wabash.
4. If I live in Cicero near Austin and Roosevelt, and I want to get to O'Hare airport, how many train lines do I have to take?

Answer: 1

The Blue line is kind of shaped like a sideways U. It starts on the west side, heads east into downtown, curves north for a bit, and then heads out northwest to O'Hare.
5. Which line heads up through Evanston to serve Northwestern University?

Answer: Purple

I don't think it is a coincidence that this line is Purple - the Wildcats' colors are purple and white. During football season, the trains are always full of fans - happy and excited on their way to the game, and usually sad and dejected after the Cats lose. Ah, to make it to the Rose Bowl again, like in 1996.
6. Lincoln Park is a yuppie enclave on the near north side, and "Trixies" is a nickname for its inhabitants. Which of the following is a line that Lincoln Park Trixies can take to work downtown?

Answer: Brown

Trixies may also take the Red or the Purple (which only runs during rush hour), depending on where they board and exit the train. Yuppies are present on all train lnes, though, with Oak Park yuppies coming in on the Blue or the Green, and South Loopers riding the Orange.
7. Which of the following Chicago area places would I ride the Orange line to?

Answer: Midway Airport

The Blue line goes to O'Hare, the Red to Water Tower, and you have to take the commuter rail to Brookfield Zoo. The Orange line was put into operation in 1993.
8. One Saturday, a Northwestern student, who lives on campus in Evanston, would like to go visit his friend who is studying and living at IIT (the Illinois Institute of Technology) on the near South Side. What is a reasonable series of trains for him to take?

Answer: Purple to Red to Green

The Purple line does not run south of Howard on weekends! So you'd have to transfer to the red at Howard, then transfer to Green at either State and Lake or at Roosevelt, and continue to the 35th - Bronzeville - IIT station.
9. How many Western Avenue stations are there, on all train lines?

Answer: 5

The Brown line has a station just south of Lawrence on Western, and the Orange Line has a station at 49th and Western. The Blue line has two Western stops: Western on the Eisenhower Expressway (290), and Western just south of Armitage. Western & Cermak is on the Pink line.
10. Which train line serves the United Center, home of the Bulls and Blackhawks?

Answer: Blue

The United Center is on Madison and Damen on the near west side. Take the Forest Park branch of the Blue line and exit at Medical Center. Walk a couple blocks north and there you are, in Jordan's house. (Even though he's gone it will always be his house!) You could also take the green line and exit at Ashland, but you'd have quite a walk to the Stadium.
