Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The world famous annual rally that traditionally started in Paris, France, ended in which Senegalese city?

Answer: Dakar

The city of Dakar is the capital of Senegal, and sits on the Cape Verde Peninsula, on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. It is the largest city in Senegal, and is also the westernmost city in Africa.
2. What is the official language of Senegal?

Answer: French

French is the official language, however most people speak their own ethnic languages. Other recognised languages spoken in Senegal include Wolof, Soninke, Seereer-Siin, Fula, Maninka, and Diola.
3. What is the currency used in Senegal?

Answer: CFA Franc

The CFA Franc was created in 1945, due to the weakness of the French Franc post-World War II. The CFA Franc is used in 14 African countries, including Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mali, and Niger.
4. Senegal has borders with how many countries?

Answer: 5

Mauritania lies to the north of Senegal, Mali to the east, and Guinea and Guinea-Bissau to the south. The Gambia is almost completely inside Senegal, but has a western coast on the Atlantic.
5. Are the Senegambian Stone Circles a recognised UNESCO World Heritage site?

Answer: Yes

They most certainly are. The Senegambian Stone Circles were added to the World Heritage List in 2006. Each circle comprises ten to twenty-four stones, some weighing in at almost ten tonnes! There are approximately 1000 such circles positioned along 350km of the River Gambia.
6. Senegal gained independence from France in which year?

Answer: 1960

Senegal and French Sudan merged to form the Mali Federation in 1959. The Mali Federation gained independence the next year, but due to political conflict, the Federation disbanded in August that year. Senegal then gained independence, and elected Leopold Senghor as its first president.
7. What is the dominant religion in Senegal?

Answer: Islam

Approximately 95% of Senegalese people are of the Islamic faith. It is interesting to note that, although the main religion is Islam, the first president, Leopold Senghor, was a Catholic.
8. What is the largest city in Eastern Senegal?

Answer: Tambacounda

Tambacounda is located approximately 400km away from the largest city in Western Senegal, Dakar. It lies in the province of the same name.
9. The Senegalese flag consists of three vertical stripes with a five-pointed star in the centre. What colour is NOT on the flag?

Answer: Blue

A green stripe on the left, a yellow stripe in the middle, a red stripe on the right, and green star in the centre make up the flag for Senegal. These colours are known as the Pan-African colours. Each colour represents something different: the green stripe represents the colour of the Prophet's flag (for Muslims); the symbol of hope (for Christians); and the colour of fecundity (for Animists).

The yellow (or gold) stripe is the symbol of wealth, as the country aims to progress its economy. The red stripe represents blood, and the sacrifice accepted by Senegal, as well as the determination to fight against underdevelopment.

The green star represents hope brought by Senegal's independence.
10. The motto for Senegal, when translated into English, reads: "One People, One ____, One Faith". What is the missing word?

Answer: Goal

The motto sits upon the Coat of Arms of Senegal, and, like the flag, bears the Pan-African colours. It dates back to the 1960s, when Senegal gained independence.
