Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What colour is line 2 on the Seoul Subway map?

Answer: Green

Just like the London Underground system, each line has a different colour. Line 5 is purple, line 4 is blue, and pink is the colour of line 8.
2. Which station should you get off at if you want to visit the World Trade Centre?

Answer: Samseong

Although Jamsil is on the same line (number 2), it is several stops after the World Trade Centre. Incidentally, getting off at this station also allows you to visit the Co-Ex Mall, a wonderful collection of shops!
3. Which piece of classical music plays when the train has to stop to be cleaned (and therefore the passengers have to get off and wait for the next train)?

Answer: Boccherini's Minuet in E

This is the most frustrating thing about the system, and it always happens to me! Moreover, "Fur Elise" seems to be the ringtone on every doorbell in this country!
4. When did construction start on the Seoul Subway network?

Answer: 1970

In 1950, the Korean War had just started-redevelopment was a long way off.
5. What do you get at a station if you ask for a 'jeong-aek seung chagwon'?

Answer: Multiple-use subway ticket

These cost 10,000 won (about five English pounds) and are one of the cheapest forms of travel in this wonderful country!
6. One of these habits is allowed at subway stations. Which one?

Answer: Eating

Although eating in public places is legally allowed, it tends to be frowned upon. The other practices carry heavy fines.
7. Getting off at Anyang station immediately brings you to which landmark, which operated until 2020?

Answer: Lotte Department Store

The store is actually built into the station (and is very expensive)!
8. Which is the longest of the major subway lines?

Answer: Line 5

It is known as the Purple Line.
9. How many people use the subway on average every day?

Answer: 5.6 million

At weekends, the trains resemble moving sardine cans!
10. How many stations are there on the subway in total?

Answer: 115

This, as with all other statistics in this quiz, comes from the Seoul Subway website at www.seoulsubway.co.kr, which (thankfully) has an English translation. Hope you enjoyed my quiz-if you live in Korea, please get in touch!
