Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Of the following, in which city would you be able to catch a ride on the skunk train?

Answer: Fort Bragg

If you enjoy train rides and the beauty of a Redwood forest, this is the trip for you. You have your choice of taking either a full day or a half-day skunk train ride. The full day is an 8.5 hour trip that journeys from Fort Bragg or Willits, stops at its midpoint called Northspur, then continues on to the opposite city, and then returns you to your original point of origin.

The half-day is a shorter trip just about 3.5 hours long, that travels from Fort Bragg or Willits to Northspur and back.
2. What's the name of the place that is located in Santa Cruz and is sure to blow one's mind with its unexplained gravitational pull?

Answer: Mystery Spot

There have beeen many theories on the unexplained gravity pull there. For me, I don't really know what to believe. All I do know is that I honestly felt very dizzy and couldn't walk without holding on to the railing.
3. Located in Klamath, this place has a trail of oddly shaped Redwood trees. What's it called?

Answer: Trees of Mystery

If you're interested in seeing trees that seem to take on a growth formation of their own, this is the place for you.
4. What's the name of the Victorian mansion that is so complex and huge that even its owner needed a map to find her way around?

Answer: Winchester Mystery House

The story behind this place is that Sarah Winchester was supposedly so haunted by spirits that she kept building on to her house to confuse them and keep them away. All I can say is I wouldn't recommend wandering off on your own, because who knows you may never find your way out!
5. What's the name of a very popular place in Monterey where you can find hundreds of marine life species?

Answer: Monterey Bay Aquarium

There's so much to see there. Species of interest for me were for one, I couldn't believe how big tuna fish actually are. I was amazed by their size. Also, the jellyfish caught my eye. There were so many of various colors and sizes. My favorite part of the aquarium, however, had to be the hands-on exhibit.

There were many species available for visitors to actually touch, and I was surprised at how soft a starfish is to the touch. I had always had the impression of a rough shell-like feel when looking at a starfish, so I was very surprised by that one.
6. There's a Redwood tree located in Leggett that you can drive through.

Answer: true

Yes, this is absolutely true. The base of the tree has an opening large enough for an automobile to drive-thru it. Of course, it did not grow that way, it was purposely carved out.
7. What's the name of the island that was once home to some maximum security prisoners?

Answer: Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island was used as a federal maximum security prison from 1934 to 1963. I think it's a shame that this prison is no longer in operation, for I believe it kept hardcore criminals right where they belonged with a slim to zero chance of ever escaping to freedom.

It was closed in 1963 due to high operating and repair costs along with security issues, and has supposedly been proven far more popular and profitable by allowing tourists to visit there.
8. At this place, there's so much to see that they have four different tours to show different sections of the estate. What's it called?

Answer: Hearst Castle

Located in the city of San Simeon which lies on a scenic stretch of SR 1 that extends from San Francisco to San Luis Obispo, this estate once belonged to William Randolph Hearst. He was a newspaper publisher who died in 1951. This castle is of remarkable beauty and has lots to see.

When visiting, however, it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes for each tour involves a lot of walking and has many stairways.
9. At this campground, located in Felton, you can take a ride on an 1880 steam train through the redwoods of Santa Cruz county. What's its name?

Answer: Roaring Camp

Riding the steam train was a lot of fun. You sit in gondola-type cars and can smell the freshness of the Redwood trees. During our ride, the guide told us of special events they have. For example, on Halloween they take you on a guided train ride tour through the haunted Redwood forest. I would love to go back for that, sounds like scary fun! Also, there's a place deep in the forest that you can only get to by the steam train that a lot of people go to, to get married at.
10. Once located in Oakdale, this company is still manufacturing lots of chocolate.

Answer: Hershey's

When I was there, I couldn't believe all the kinds of candy that Hershey makes. For example, they are the makers of all Reeses' candy. I had no idea of that until I took the factory tour. I thought Reeses was of their own company. Little did I know! A couple others include Kit-Kats and Almond Joys. Well, I hope you liked the quiz and had a little bit of California fun with it. :-)
