Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's travel to Fort Bragg, California. "Glass Beach" as it is known, is a popular tourist spot. What was it that formed the rounded glass sand that covers the beach?

Answer: The dumping of trash by the locals

The main street of Fort Bragg itself has been classified as a California Historical Landmark in the Mendocino County region. Prior to the American Civil War, the city was built as a military garrison. At the turn of the 20th Century, the citizens of Fort Bragg had established their own water dump site. Glass, appliances, and even vehicles were dumped at this location and in some cases, lit on fire to help alleviate the trash piles. By 1967, the dump site had closed. Following numerous government cleanup projects and through general weathering by ocean waves, what remains is a pristine beach with jewelry quality glass rocks.
2. We pack up our bags, grab our passports, and fly down to Maho Beach on Saint Martin Island in the Caribbean. What popular activity will we be engaged in upon our arrival on the beach?

Answer: Watching planes fly overhead

Maho Beach is located adjacent to the Princess Juliana International Airport. Watching the daily flights into and out of the airport is a popular activity among tourists. Government officials have issued warnings about the dangers of being on the beach as many flights are no less than 100 feet above ground level. Due to the low altitude of the planes, officials warn that injury or death may occur due to heavy winds caused by the jet blasts of the planes.
3. Get a good night's rest because we're going to head to Europe next. We've set our bearings for the Algarve, Portugal. Nearby Benagil Beach has some unique features that have been formed due to erosion. What are they?

Answer: Sea Caves

Historically, the Benagil region was used for the ocean fishing industry. Sea caves have become a popular tourist attraction for those traveling to Benagil Beach. Guided tours take visitors through the caves that are a beautiful sight to see. Other beautiful locations to see include the large cliffs nearby and grottoes on the beach.
4. We get on the bus and within a few hours we're in the Northern town of Ribadeo, Spain. Just west of the town is a beach that features some really unique features. We'll have to wait until low tide before we can truly appreciate these large natural structures. What are we looking at?

Answer: Cathedral shaped arches

Known as "As Catedrais" beach, this literally translates into "Beach of the Cathedrals". The beach is still accessible and usable during high tide as tourists can walk on top of the structures. It is during low tide however, that As Catedrais comes to life. Once low tide is at its lowest, one can walk along the sands that were once below the water. Once there, the sight of large caves and cliffs are present.

The main attraction are the 30 meter tall arches that look like churches or cathedrals rising above.
5. Let's gather our winter coats, pack our gear, and fly to a colder region of Europe. The Jökulsárlón glacial lake region of Iceland have shores and beaches that are not really conducive to swimming. The beauty of this region has even been featured in some popular films. Which of the following movies did not have the Jökulsárlón region featured in them?

Answer: Alive

The Jökulsárlón glacial lake and the Breiđamerkurjökull glacier have appeared in various popular culture movies including "A View To A Kill", "Die Another Day", "Batman Begins", "Beowulf and Grendel", and "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider". In fact, the 1985 film "A View To A Kill" started the trend of tourism and commercial boat tours within the lake.

The beach areas are very cold and not popular swimming beaches, but are very unique due to their very dark sands with large glaring ice crystals on the surface. Wildlife on the beaches include puffins, skua, and seals.
6. Let's head due east shall we to the "Emerald Isle" and visit a strange beach area known for its unique basalt columns. What location should I be booking my plane ticket for?

Answer: Northern Ireland

The Giant's Causeway Beach in Northern Ireland is located just northeast of the town of Bushmills. A volcanic eruption formed pillar structures which were then horizontally fractured into what are known as "biscuits". The Giant's Causeway Tramway was built by 1890 and attracted visitors from all over the world to see these unique formations.
7. Time to get plenty of rest as we have quite a long flight ahead of us tomorrow. After landing, we take a rickshaw to the Chandipur Beach in India. What is unique about this beach?

Answer: The water recedes a long distance

During low tide, the water at Chandipur Beach can recede up to five kilometers from the shore. This beach is known for many horseshoe crab being found on the beach. Seeing the sea vanish right before one's eyes is what makes this popular tourist beach so unique. On a side note, the Anjuna Beach in Goa, India is also a unique beach.

This beach is known during tourist season for its trance parties, flocks of cows, and a unique flea market.
8. Hurry! Our next flight leaves in just one hour. After a pit stop at the Shell Beach in Shark's Bay, Australia, we catch another short flight to Hot Water Beach near Whitianga, New Zealand. Which of the following is not a common danger for tourists visiting this beach?

Answer: Water temperature

Hot Water Beach is a geothermal tourist attraction located on the Coromandel Peninsula on the North Island of New Zealand. Tourists from around the world either bring their own shovels or rent them at the beach to dig holes and bathe in the underground hot springs. Water temperatures have been known to reach 140 degrees Fahrenheit but are not considered dangerous. Large holes dug by other tourists pose tripping hazards and rip currents caused due to heavy tides are considered dangers (rip currents have claimed the lives of tourists over the years). Large waves pose a threat to tourists as they can be swept out to sea.
9. Before we head to our final destination, we'll make a trip to some unique beaches located in the Maranhao state in Brazil. Are they really beaches though? It really is a matter of interpretation. What makes the "beaches" in Lençóis Maranhenses National Park unique?

Answer: They are lagoons

Lençóis Maranhenses became a National Park in 1981. The white sands and sand dunes within the park look like deserts, but in fact, are not. The park is made up of many lagoons that are blue, black, and green in color. During rainfall, some of the water remains forming lagoons due to the fact that there is impermeable rock found within the park.

This water cannot drain or percolate and stays in the form of a lagoon. The sand around the lagoons forms a picturesque beach environment for tourists to come and see year round.
10. We are going to finish our journey in the tiny province of Prince Edward Island, Canada. This region of Canada has many beaches that are known for their red sand. What causes the sand to be red?

Answer: High iron-oxide content

The province of Prince Edward Island has a region known as the "Red Sands Shore". Popular tourist sites in this region include Glen Afton Golf Course, Confederation Bridge, and the Port-la-Joye-Fort Amherst National Historic Site. This region is made up of clay and sedimentary rock.

Some of the rock is a reddish sandstone or mudstone. Within these rocks are a heavy iron-oxide content that form once exposed to air giving this region and its beach sand a very distinct red color.
