Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This beach town is not only famous for its long beaches and clear water, it is also the "Golf Capital of the World." What is this South Carolina beach popular with spring breakers and retirees alike?

Answer: Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach has over 120 golf courses in the small town, making it a popular destination for retirees and business professionals, not just the usual American college students on Spring Break. If you like baseball check out a Pelicans game or visit The Ripken Experience, a must for all baseball fans.
2. The beach, known to many around the world as SoBe, was made famous by movies like 'Scarface,' and is home to a unique Cuban culture. The Art Deco National Historical District is located along SoBe in what city in the Americas?

Answer: Miami

Although located in the United States, Miami is mostly Spanish speaking due to the large number of immigrants from Latin America, especially Cuba. SoBe, or South Beach as most Americans would call it, is one of the most popular beaches in the world and attracts visitors from the entire globe.
3. Cancún, Acapulco, and Playa del Carmen are just a few of the famous beaches in this country. Grab a Corona and try to avoid the students on their spring break trips while enjoying the fabulous beaches, and maybe a Mayan ruin or two, in which country?

Answer: Mexico

In Cancún make sure you check out both the Caribbean side and the lagoon side of the resort. If you are looking for a beach that is less of the 24/7 party scene of Cancún, check out Acapulco or Playa del Carmen. To avoid the crowds, try lesser known beaches that are not in Yucatán or Quintana Roo.
4. Ka'anapali Beach is not the most famous beach in Hawai'i: Waikîkî beach in Honolulu on O'ahu is the most widely known. Ka'anapali is a great place to go for a quieter beach and to see the magnificent gardens and beach that was home to Hawai'ian kings and queens in the past. On what island does Ka'anapali lie?

Answer: Maui

Ka'anapali is also home to one of Hawaii's most famous golf courses; the Royal Ka'anapali. This beach was once well used when Hawai'i was a kingdom and even saw use as a training ground for Hawai'ian warriors. Avoid the crowds at Waikîkî by visiting Maui instead.
5. This city's most famous beach used to go by a Tupi name, Sacopenapã, meaning 'the way of the socós.' The second most famous beach in the city, Ipanema, has a less than appealing name in Tupi; 'stinky lake'. In what city are these two beaches?

Answer: Rio de Janeiro

Sacopenapã is now called Copacabana, the most famous beach in Rio. Ipanema has been listed as the sexiest beach in the world by the "Travel Channel", and a trip to Rio is sure not to let you down. Rio de Janeiro is the 6th-largest city in the Americas.
6. Plage de St. Jean is located directly at the end of the runway of Gustaf III airport on this island. The island is called Ouanalao in the native language and has a capital named after Gustaf III of Sweden, even though the island is a French Overseas Department. What is this island that separated from Guadeloupe in 2003?

Answer: Saint-Barthelemy

Like Maho Beach on Saint Martin, Plage de St. Jean sits at the end of a runway and gives you great views of planes taking off and landing. This beach is usually a good place to go to celebrity watch because of its more quiet nature.
7. Negril on this Caribbean island is perhaps not as famous as Montego Bay, but Seven Mile Beach is beautiful and is even featured in 'The Man with the Golden Gun.' On what island nation would you find Negril and Montego Bay?

Answer: Jamaica

Seven Mile Beach is actually much shorter than that, some people saying it reaches six miles, some saying it is no longer than four. It is home to Rick's Café, which is consistently recognized as one of the world's best beach bars. Don't forget to go cliff jumping as well!
8. The two most visited spots on Española Island, Bahía Gardner and Punta Suárez, are a beach and a wildlife sanctuary respectively. Bahía Gardner is famous for its sea lions, lizards, and mockingbirds you will encounter. This beach is also home to the world's entire population of waved albatrosses. Where can you find this beach?

Answer: Galapagos Islands

The entirety of the Galapagos Islands are famous for their unique, endemic wildlife. Española Island is the southernmost of the archipelago and is accessible by boat from the larger islands. The wildlife that you can see while on this beach is incredible and definitely worth a visit.
9. Mosquito Bay in Vieques, Puerto Rico, is one of a few national natural landmarks in Puerto Rico. It is a famous beach for tourists because of Pyrodinium bahamense, a micro-organism which glows blue when the water is disturbed. By what other name is this bay known?

Answer: Bioluminescent Bay

Although the Spanish originally thought that the neon blue glowing of the water was due to the Devil, it is not called Devil's Bay. To try to contain the water in the small bay, the Spanish dropped boulders at the connection to the ocean, which has helped preserve the natural phenomenon. You can even schedule kayak tours in the bay.
10. This beach in the Dominican Republic is famous for an event that takes place their every year. This beach and the surrounding resorts are a great destination for extreme sports lovers, and is known for a certain type of surfing that fills the waters. Which beautiful Dominican beach is this?

Answer: Kite Beach

Kite Beach is famous for kite surfing and hosts a large kite surfing competition every June. You can find Kite Beach in Cabarete in the DR. Expect the skies to be filled with the kites of surfers all times of the year.
11. If you hate getting sand in your swim trunks and having to wash dried sand out of your hair after a day at the beach, this spot may be your perfect destination. Located on the Hawai'ian island of Kaua'i, which beach's namesake pebbles take over 15 years to create?

Answer: Glass Beach

Glass Beach is covered in glass pebbles that have been deposited there from discarded glass in the oceans that have since been smoothed over by the salt water and the waves. The base rock on the beach is a more standard basalt. There are similar beaches with glass pebble coverings located in the US state of California.
12. East Beach is just one beach in this California city. Which town and its beaches have become famous as the birthplace of American beach culture and is sometimes called "America's Riviera"? Don't confuse it with Santa Monica and its pier!

Answer: Santa Barbara

The Los Angeles area is home to many famous beaches including Long Beach, Venice Beach and Santa Monica. Perhaps the pier at Santa Monica and the name Venice Beach are more iconic, but American beach culture started at Santa Barbara. America's Riviera is another location worth visiting.
13. You will find Cayo de Agua beach in Los Roques National Park in this country. The beach is unique in that you will not find kiosks, bars, or even too many resorts nearby. The beach is not so crowded and the water is a clear blue. Nearby reefs are great for snorkeling trips. In what country would you find Cayo de Agua?

Answer: Venezuela

Cayo de Agua is a little off the beaten path, but you cannot find paradise in the middle of the biggest cities. Make a trip to Cayo de Agua and enjoy having a slice of paradise almost to yourself. Local boat tours are on offer and don't forget to go snorkeling.
14. Puerto Viejo de Limon, located on the Caribbean side of this central American country, is famous for its surfing and pristine white sand beaches. Its proximity to many national parks and its combination of Latin American, Caribbean, and indigenous cultures and food give Puerto Viejo a unique vibe. Pura Vida is alive at Puerto Viejo in which country?

Answer: Costa Rica

Of all the beaches on this list that I have visited, Puerto Viejo was by far my favorite. Costa Rica is a beautiful country that combines mountains, jungles, Pacific beaches, and Caribbean beaches. Puerto Viejo is a great mix of three different cultures and is home to many foreign beach bums who come here on vacation and end up living and working in the park or as surfing instructors!
15. This beach is not the idyllic tropical paradise that most associate with a beach, but it is always crowded, perhaps even too crowded. If you live in New York this may be the only place to escape to some nature for a while, so just hop on the A or S lines and come to which famous beach?

Answer: Rockaway Beach

In the summer times, Rockaway Beach will be packed with local New Yorkers out to enjoy a day in nature and the sun. It is not a particularly scenic beach, but is a popular destination, and perhaps one of the most famous American beaches.
