Answer: Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir is located in northern India in the Himalayan Region. Historically, the state has been one of the most violent as it is also claimed by Pakistan and China. Waves of violence come and go but despite that, the area is a very popular tourist destination for those wishing to visit the Himalayan mountains. Pictured is Mount Nun, one of the mountains in the Himalayas that can be found in Jammu and Kashmir.

The state has two capitals: the Summer Capital of Srinagar and the Winter Capital of Jammu.

Its location in India but near China makes Jammu and Kashmir the location of many sites for Hindus and Buddhists. However, it is the state with the largest percentage of Muslims and is home to some of India's most iconic mosques including Hazratbal Shrine on Dal Lake.

Answer: Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh is a large state in central India nicknamed the Heart of India. It is primarily known for its beautiful landscapes and rural areas. Pictured is Mandav Lake, one of Madhya Pradesh's scenic lakefronts. About a third of Madhya Pradesh is forested.

The state is also India's largest producer, by far, of diamonds and copper and also produces much of India's coal and other minerals. The famous city here is Bhopal which was the site of a 1984 gas leak that killed thousands and poisoned over a half million people. Since then, Bhopal has taken a number of steps to improve its environment, although the effects of the gas leak remain in the water and soil quality.

Kerala is located on the Southern tip of India. It is commonly called God's Own Country because of its beauty. Spices, especially pepper, are grown here. Kerala is also known for its production of coconuts, coffee, rubber and jackfruit. Kerala is full of hills, lakes and has a large coastline along the Lakshadweep Sea.

This gives Kerala a very diverse geography and a large collection of plant and animal life. Nilgiri Biosphere, Ashtamudi Lake and the Western Ghats are just some of the places in Kerala with protected wetlands and habitats. One of the most famous events in Kerala is the snake boat races on Punnamada Lake which take place during the harvest festival.

West Bengal contains the Siliguri Corridor or the Chicken's Neck, which is a very narrow strip of land connecting the small eastern Himalayan states to the rest of India. It can be flooded during monsoon season, be intensely hot during the summer and harshly cold during the winter.

Rajasthan is a western state that was once the center of the Indus Valley Civilization thousands of years ago. Although it is the largest state and one of the most populous, much of the land area is covered with the Thar Desert, which is also called the Great Indian Desert. The Thar Desert is extremely dry and windy with few water sources.

One of the most visited sites are the ancient Dilwara Temples which are ancient Jainism temples famous for their ornate marble carvings. Other popular sites are the many tiger reserves, including Mukundra Hill Tiger Reserve.

The main cities in the state are the capital Jaipur, Jodhpur and Bikaner. Jaipur is part of the Golden Triangle of Indian tourism. Some of the sites there include the Hawa Mahal (Wind Palace) and the Jal Mahal, a palace in the middle of a lake.

Varanasi is considered the holiest city in Hinduism and Jainism.

Much of the architecture here is ornate and made of granite and bronze. The main city here is Chennai, formerly called Madras. Chennai is home to the Tamil film industry called Kollywood. Chennai is considered one of the more modern, business-friendly cities in India.

It has a mix of modern skyscrapers, ancient temples, peaceful parks and serene beaches.

Hinduism is still the prominent religion but there is a sizable Catholic minority.

Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra and is its most populous city. It is the center of the Bollywood film industry and the wealthiest city in India. The most famous site in Mumbai is the Gateway of India, an arc built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Bombay in 1911. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is another famous site. It is a very elaborate and old railway station. Other sites in Maharashtra include the famous Ellora Caves, a system of temples built into caves. The largest temple there is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, although there are other temples dedicated to Buddhism and Jainism.

Maharashtra has the biggest economy of any state in India. It is heavily industrialized in the cities, though there are some large sugar plantations in the more rural areas.
